Explore the technique of collage and décollage as strategies for mixed media works of art with artist and educator Jean Hess. She will give a brief lecture and discussion about the essence of collage with varied examples.Workshop fee is $275 members/$300 non-members. Skill Level: All levels are welcome.
Day One: Create “traditional” collages on a backing or substrate using the more common methods of joining or overlaying materials such as gluing, acrylic resins and paint. Use found materials – the everyday, the damaged, the discarded and layering followed by removal of portions. Techniques include but not limited to spilling, breaking, crushing, marking and chance juxtapositions of materials. Impact of natural processes such as fading, dissolving, abrasions and scarring are also incorporated. Backing or substrates can include wood, canvas, paperboard, fabric, glass (clear; mirrored), metal, leather, bark, plastic, ceramic, vellum. Other aspects of collage to consider are self-imposed limitations or discipline: use only what is at hand – found, recycled and swapping and trading materials with other artists.
Day Two: Free-floating collage/assemblage. Using techniques such as stitching, wring, stapling cold figure in place. You do not actually have to begin with a background. Many collage artists have simply connected elements to each other while creating a hanging tapestry or scrim. This may be a more recent phenomenon utilized by such artists as El Anatsui in 2000’s, Howardena Pindell in 1970’s and Pierre Buraglio in 1970’s. Hess will explore the works of historically significant collage artists. She will also demonstrate different surface materials, tools, methods and manipulations.
Jean Hess: A native of Maryland, Jean Hess currently resides in Tennessee. Her work is influenced by her studies in cultural anthropology [U. New Mexico, BA, MA] as well as in art [Maryland Institute College of Art, University of Maryland]. Hess was given a solo show at the Huntsville Museum of Art in 2004, with an award-winning catalogue accompanying that exhibition. In 2013 her work was featured in “Abstract America,” shown at Saatchi Online, curated by Rebecca Wilson, Saatchi Gallery, London. With two other artists her work was featured in a show at Knoxville Museum of Art in 2014.

Loosening up and Seeing Color Everywhere: Watercolor Portraits
Thursday – Sunday, March 16 – 19, 2017

Do you find yourself picking up those small brushes too soon? Do you wish you could see more and different colors in your images? Do some colors scare you? Do you always intend to loose some edges but then find your finished paintings very tight? Workshop fee is $425 members/$450 non-members. Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced.
Kathy Durdin is a national award winning watercolor and mixed media artist, and has exhibited and won awards in numerous watercolor exhibits across the US. She is a signature member of Southern, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Tallahassee and Florida Suncoast Watercolor Societies. In 2013, she was featured in Watercolor Artist “Ones to Watch”. She was also the 2012 President of Florida Watercolor Society.
She has always loved watercolor as a medium while it is very unforgiving, its freshness cannot be replicated. Her style is loose, to take advantage of the characteristics of the medium.
As an artist, she wants to focus on what she connects with emotionally, people. She finds interesting people, situations and images all the time. She rarely works on posed situations, as she thinks informal interaction much more interesting. Watercolor provides her with a medium that allows her to create with work quickly and create paintings with freshness and immediacy as she expresses herself.
Qiang’s approaches to still-life painting will be demonstrated with particular focus on composing dramatic setups by observing the light distribution, and using bold and loose strokes to create a powerful and accurate representation on canvas. Using demonstrations, presentation, and individual assistance, Qiang will explain his process of creating energetic paintings by manipulating values, colors, edges, and brushwork. Personal attention will be given to each student according to his/her currently skill level and personal goals in art. The workshop is designed for indoor practice with live settings. Workshop fee is $525 members/$550 non-members. Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced.
Qiang Huang (pronounced as Chong Wong) was born and raised in Beijing China and now lives in Austin, Texas. He has studied art from multiple master artists like David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw. His paintings show remarkable accuracy and expressive brush strokes. Since 2004 his paintings have been selected continuously for the 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th Oil Painters of America’s National Juried Exhibitions. American Artist Magazine has featured his teaching on the summer issue of the “Workshop”.

Watercolor: Simple, Fast, and Focused

Challenge yourself and go beyond your boundaries in watercolor! Mel will encourage you to experience the magical, spontaneous, and transparent qualities of watercolor and will help you discover that watercolor is at its best when it is set free. Emphasis will be placed on: Gaining more confidence by simplifying your approach to subject matter. Learning to paint with energy and focus. Understanding that clarity of thought and emotion are essential in the medium of watercolor. Bringing more transparency and vitality to your paintings. Workshop fee is $825 members/$850 non-members.
Mel’s workshops, which are designed for beginners to advanced painters, are casual and friendly. This watercolor workshop of painting landscapes and people in landscapes includes: Daily morning demonstrations by Mel in his loose, representational style. The demos are spirited with an easy, open dialogue between Mel and the class with Mel always welcoming questions from students during the demos and throughout the workshop day.
Mel Stabin is an internationally known teacher, author, and watercolorist. A graduate of Pratt Institute, Mel studied the art of watercolor with Edgar Whitney. For over thirty years Mel was an award-winning art director and creative director for major advertising agencies in New York City. He is a signature member of prestigious art societies including the American Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, North East Watercolor Society, Georgia Watercolor Society, and New Jersey Watercolor Society.
Mel has written numerous feature articles for American Artist, The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor, Watercolor Magic, & Watercolor Artist and is the author of two popular books, Watercolor: Simple, Fast, & Focused and The Figure In Watercolor: Simple, Fast, & Focused.
2017 Master Artist Workshop with Michael Story
Understanding Skies & Reflections: Landscape Painting in Oil or Pastel
Thursday –Saturday, August 24 – 26, 2017

Improve your paintings by adding drama to your skies! Join Michael for three days as we use the sky as a dramatic design element within our landscape painting. We will observe and interpret cloud formations and how they reflect in water. We will also apply oil and pastel painting techniques to convincingly capture the mood of a scene. Michael will provide photo reference or students may bring their own. Skill Level: All skill levels are welcome. Workshop fee is $400 members/$425 non-members.
He will demonstrate and provide photo reference to paint from if desired along with color exercises you may complete after the workshop.
Michael Story earned a BFA in Fine Art from the University of South Carolina in 1976. He later traveled to New York, studying pastel and oil painting under internationally know artist, Daniel Greene. Today, Story is an award-winning artist who regularly teaches pastel and oil painting. He gives lectures, and juries art shows. His client list of private buyers and corporate collectors continues to grow, including the Marriott Corporation, Progressive Energy of Florida, The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, Holiday Inn, Fluor Corporation, Erving Texas, and Walt Disney World. His paintings have been reproduced by major publishers such as Canadian Art Prints of British Columbia and distributed worldwide.

CHARCOAL: Expressive Mark Making, A Painter’s Approach to Drawing
Friday & Saturday, September 15 & 16, 2017
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Students will explore charcoal as the perfect drawing medium for expressive mark making. Students will develop a personal approach to loose, aggressive mark making with a combination of additive and subtractive techniques using charcoal and erasers for mark making and developing grounds. While charcoal will be the primary medium, eventually students will be encouraged to combine other media such as conté crayon and spray paint. The class will focus upon mark making as it relates to abstraction and later students may opt to explore the different ways these same techniques can be applied to observational drawing for a provocative and beautiful fusion of abstraction and realism. All levels are welcome. Workshop fee is $225 members/$250 non-members.
Gary Chapman is a Professor of Art – Drawing and Painting at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and has had over 60 solo exhibitions with institutions such as The Arts Center of St. Petersburg, Florida and the Indianapolis Art Center. He has participated in national and international exhibitions, and his paintings have been purchased for numerous museums, corporate and private collections. He has a MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and BA and BS, Berea College.
This intensive class is designed for individuals with little or no prior drawing training and perhaps believe that learning to draw well is only possible for those lucky people with “inborn talent”. However, it has been proven that the global skill of drawing any perceived object, person or place requires five basic component perceptual skills. These skills are the perception of edges, spaces, relationships, lights and shadows, and the whole or gestalt. Global or whole skills, such as reading, driving and drawing, in time become automatic with the integration of the component skills. Instruction by Brian Bomeisler, Dr. Betty Edwards’ son. Each day begins with a lecture on one of the five skills required. After lectures, students participate in drawing exercises, with Brian’s instruction, through the day. The day will end with a critique of the day’s session. Skill Level: All. Workshop fee is $1,600 for Museum members or non-members.
Brian Bomeisler received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute Brooklyn, New York in 1975, and has been a working and showing artist since then. He lives and works in Soho, New York City. In 1985 he received a Fellowship from the NEA and has paintings in collections at The Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla, The Hyde Collection, New York and corporate and private collections around the world. Bomeisler taught alongside his mother, Betty Edwards, since 1988 and since her retirement in 1998. Since then he has been leading the Drawing and Painting Workshops worldwide. He has also been an instructor at the New York Academy of Art for a number of years. His illustrations appear alongside the text in “The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”.
The workshop sessions begin each morning at 9:00 a.m. when Couch completes a painting, explaining what he is doing, and why, as he paints. The “mysteries” of design will be unraveled for you while you learn watercolor painting! Students paint in the afternoons, after which Couch critiques all the day’s completed work, including his own. An optional slide show/lecture on the principles of design – including color and composition – will be presented in the afternoon of the first day. Skill Level: Beginners, Students, Hobbyists & Professional Artists. Workshop fee is $425 members/$450 non-members.
Couch received a Bachelor Degree in Art from the University of Tampa, and did further work at Pratt Institute in New York, while an artist for Associated Press. Then for years he was a freelance illustrator while studying watercolor painting with Edgar A. Whitney, ANA. He has written three books on watercolor. His first, titled Watercolor: You Can Do It was published by North Light Publishing in 1987. It went through five printings and became North Light’s all time best selling book on painting. It has been the textbook for several college art departments and has been translated into Chinese for markets overseas. In 1989 a follow-up book on technique was published by the same publisher. It went through three printings and was translated into Japanese for that market. A third book, on design, titled Tony Couch’s Keys to Successful Painting was also published by North Light.
Explore both studio and plein air pastel painting with instruction by internationally acclaimed artist, instructor, and author Liz Haywood-Sullivan. This intensive pastel workshop starts with one day in the studio where we will cover using her Good Bones structural system to painting and discussion of portability with pastels. The next two days we move into the outdoors. Our daily studies will involve direct observation of the landscape with instruction in choosing your subject and composition from life, aerial perspective, working with underpainting, correct drawing and sky and water valuework. In both settings Liz will start each day with a demonstration and there will be two group critiques. There will be plenty of daily individual instruction at your easel. Skill Level: Intermdiate to Advanced. Workshop fee is $625 members/$650 non-members.
Liz Haywood-Sullivan, PSA-MP, IAPS/MC, is a representational landscape artist painting in the pastel medium. Her award-winning paintings are defined by strong contrasts and color, dramatic lighting, and graphic compositions, which often feature the interplay between man and the environment. In 1996, she left the design world to follow her passion for fine art and since then has worked as a professional artist, art educator, and arts advocate. Liz became the Third President of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) in 2013. She is currently working on her third IAPS Biennial Convention and the twelfth IAPS Juried Exhibition during her tenure. She also is the IAPS representative to the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) Subcommittee responsible for developing standards for health labeling, performance, and quality of artist materials. She is on the Board of Advisors for The Pastel Journal, and is a Board Member for the China Pastel Network/Ming Gallery of Art in China. She has earned Master Pastelist status with the Pastel Society of America and has her Master Circle designation with IAPS.
