Enjoy learning about art together!
Families and children are invited to participate in a range of programs especially designed with younger visitors in mind. The Family Programs offer fun, interactive art making activities for families with children ages 3 and up that will sure to spark one’s creativity! Activities are recommended for children ages 3 and up. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
No registration is required – drop-in, make and take a fantastic work of art home with you.
The art activities program will be held in the Stender Family Interactive Education Galleries and is appropriate for the entire family.
ART LAB provides hands-on activities, which instruct on the basic elements of art. A Walk Through Time takes visitors on a journey through major events in art history and includes replicas of famous works of art.
September 13 – Feathered Friends
Discover the art in The Red Clay Survey: 2014 Exhibition of Contemporary Southern Art. Look for different birds painted, drawn or sculpted. Create an artful bird using construction paper, oil pastel and other materials for embellishment.
October 18 – Whimsical Wearable Art!
Explore the imaginative and fantastic forms in Ginny Ruffner: Aesthetic Engineering exhibit, produce a wearable work of art using tooling foil, art papers, wire and beads.
November 22 – Come One, Come All! Circus Spectacular Sun Catchers
Inspired by the Georges Rouault: Cirque de L’Etoile Filante (Circus of the Shooting Star) exhibit, design a circus –themed work of art using geometric shapes and Scratch-Lite®material to create a rainbow of colors and patterns.
December 13 – Winter Wonderland – Snowscapes!
Create a wintry holiday-themed work of art as seen in the Grandma Moses: Visions of America using tag board, construction paper, glue, glitter pens and beads.
In the Museum Academy – Art classes are offered weekdays and Saturdays for children ages 3 and up. No prior experience is necessary to enroll, and all materials are provided for the children’s classes. High School and adult art classes and workshops are also available.
