DESCRIPTION:Teacher Professional Development Workshop with Jennie Couch\nCeramics: Creating Textures & Forms\nFriday\, April 21 | 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.\nJennie Couch\, Adjunct Instructor at UAHuntsville Department of Art\, Art History and Design\, will explore the clay medium. Teachers will learn ways to enhance their visual arts classroom curricula. Ceramics: Creating Textures & Forms workshop will assist teachers in aiding students to develop critical thinking skills and in understanding the creative process. Participants will have the opportunity to develop their visual skills through hands-on three-dimensional techniques using various forms and textures. We will create texture stamps\, explore sgraffito techniques and other non-traditional methods for finishing bisque ware. Emphasis will be placed on pinch and slab methods of handbuilding. To register\, email Kathy Johnson\, Museum Academy Assistant at kjohnson@hsvmuseum.org. \nThe workshop is presented in conjunction with the Visual Arts Achievement Program (March 12)\, Congressional Art Competition (March 12-April 23)\, Youth Art Month\, and Juried Art Teachers’ Biennial (March 12-April 23) exhibitions. \nWorkshop will be held on Friday\, April 21\, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Huntsville Museum of Art’s Museum Academy studios.  There is no fee for this workshop. Space is limited. Register Early! A workshop confirmation letter will be sent to you via email upon receipt of your registration. Lunch will be on your own! Area school systems have been notified regarding this teacher in-service professional development workshop. \nAbout Jennie Couch: \nMFA in Ceramics from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1993. BS in Art Education and a MA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Alabama. Currently teaches at as an Adjunct Instructor at UAHuntsville in the Department of Art\, Art History and Design. Artist and taught as an Associate Professor at Alabama A&M University in the Fine Arts Department ceramic and fine arts classes. She has won national and regional awards for her work; and her work is in both public and private collections throughout the country. Couch has shown her work in the Huntsville Museum of Art. She has had three solo exhibitions at Lowe Mill. Couch was the coordinator for The Bench Project. It was created by professionals volunteering for the Student Outreach Committee of the 2009 Alabama Clay Conference in Huntsville\, AL. It was non-profit\, funded completely by Bench Sponsors. The Bench Project was a professionally designed and directed Public Art project. Located throughout the city of Huntsville\, the benches enhance our community by proudly displaying students’ creativity in a manner for everyone to enjoy.

DESCRIPTION:Water Gilding\nSkill Level: All \nFriday\, April 21 & Saturday\, April 22\, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nMembers: $475 | Non-Members: $525 \nSOLD OUT \nCome to a once in a lifetime workshop with master craftsman and nationally acclaimed artist Alan Shuptrine! \nShuptrine is known for his master craftsmanship in fine framing\, carving\, sgraffito designs\, and gilding with gold leaf. The lost art of water gilding is an ancient technique\, perfected over hundreds of years. Learn the historical background of this lost art of water gilding and discuss the art of the frame by taking a tour through the museum’s collection and viewing frames on display. Then head to the Museum Academy studios and learn water gilding with 22 kt. genuine gold leaf. The application of gold leaf will be covered in depth\, and students will practice their skills of laying leaf\, as well as techniques of burnishing\, patination\, and sgraffito etching into the gilded surface. At the end of the class\, students will leave with their own water gilded and finished frame. \nAlan Shuptrine is also recognized as a nationally renowned for his sensitive and detailed paintings in watercolor and oil. \nHis accomplishments in master craftsmanship with gold leaf are in museums nationwide. For over 35 years\, Shuptrine has honed and perfected his craft through countless hours of hands-on experience. DESCRIPTION:Artsy Tots!\nAges 2 – 3\n\nPom-Pom Rainbows\nFriday\, April 21 | 11 – 11:45 a.m.\nFREE\nREGISTER NOW \n\n\n\nArtsy Tots will introduce toddlers between the ages of 2 and 3 to art and to the museum through artful short stories\, gallery play activities\, and an art activity. The program helps with color recognition\, fine motor skills\, hand-eye coordination and more! \nArtsy Tots classes are held on one Friday a month from 11:00-11:45 a.m. Class size is limited to 8 children and registration is required.
