SUMMARY:Docent-Led Public Tour: Encounters: Greely Myatt
DESCRIPTION:Docent-Led Public Tour:\nEncounters: Greely Myatt\nThursday\, August 5 | 6 p.m. \nREGISTER FOR TOUR\n\nEnjoy a public\, docent-led tour of Encounters: Greely Myatt during $5 After 5. The tour is at 6 p.m. and is included with general admission\, but registration is required. Learn more and register at the button above. \nGreely Myatt is widely recognized for his whimsical sculptural objects and monumental installations made from found materials like flooring\, neon lights\, metal scraps\, and discarded signage scavenged from the greater Memphis area. Engaging with surrealism\, pop\, folk\, and outsider art\, he has developed a compelling visual language of reimagined but recognizable forms\, often reinterpreting literal motifs like comic strips and speech bubbles in his works. In addition to found materials\, Myatt also incorporates elements like plants\, quilts\, and rugs into his pieces to reference his Mississippi childhood\, setting them against abstract elements such as light\, air\, and negative space to spark a visual and mental dialogue. \nMyatt was born in Mississippi and lives and works in West Memphis\, AR. He received his MFA from the University of Mississippi and his BFA from Delta State University\, and is a long-time professor of art at The University of Memphis. Organized by HMA.

DESCRIPTION:Mastering Skies & Reflections in Oil\, Acrylic or Pastel\nSkill Level: Beginner to Advanced \nThursday\, August 26 – Sunday\, August 29\, 2021 | 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \n$525 Members | $575 Non-Members \nRegister for workshop here!\n \nMaster your landscape painting! Join South Carolina artist Michael Story for this four-day workshop as you use the sky and water as a dramatic design element in your painting’s composition. The workshop will begin with a presentation of Michael’s painting techniques from start to finish. You’ll begin your painting with an initial charcoal drawing\, followed by color wash applied over the image. \nStarting with shadow colors\, you’ll begin blocking in your painting\, then progress from dark to light to completion. Building final layers of color and avoiding muddy mixtures\, you’ll achieve fresh\, bright color while capturing depth\, drama and mood in your work. He will demonstrate and provide photo reference to paint from\, if desired\, along with color exercises you may complete after the workshop. \nMichael Story earned a BFA in Fine Art from the University of South Carolina in 1976. He later traveled to New York\, studying pastel and oil painting under internationally known artist Daniel Greene. Today\, he is an award-winning artist who regularly teaches pastel and oil painting. His paintings have been reproduced by major publishers and distributed worldwide. For more information\, visit michaelstory.com.
