Learn more and register at the button above. \nGreely Myatt is widely recognized for his whimsical sculptural objects and monumental installations made from found materials like flooring\, neon lights\, metal scraps\, and discarded signage scavenged from the greater Memphis area. Engaging with surrealism\, pop\, folk\, and outsider art\, he has developed a compelling visual language of reimagined but recognizable forms\, often reinterpreting literal motifs like comic strips and speech bubbles in his works. In addition to found materials\, Myatt also incorporates elements like plants\, quilts\, and rugs into his pieces to reference his Mississippi childhood\, setting them against abstract elements such as light\, air\, and negative space to spark a visual and mental dialogue. \nMyatt was born in Mississippi and lives and works in West Memphis\, AR. He received his MFA from the University of Mississippi and his BFA from Delta State University\, and is a long-time professor of art at The University of Memphis. Organized by HMA.

Whyte’s WE THE PEOPLE\, which includes portraits of a Missouri dairy farmer\, Rhode Island lobsterman\, Pennsylvania science teacher\, South Carolina single mother\, and 46 other moving works\, is poised to become a national treasure honoring and connecting with men and women in uniform for generations to come. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a 136 page book\, containing 67 color and 50 black and white illustrations and published by University of South Carolina Press.

DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nFrom the Mind’s Eye: Nonrepresentational Art from the Collection\nSunday\, October 31 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last look at From the Mind’s Eye: Nonrepresentational Art from the Collection. Broadly speaking\, a work of art falls into one of three categories – representational art\, abstraction\, and nonrepresentational art. Representational art is characterized by the attempt to replicate an object or scene from the real world as accurately as possible. Abstraction runs the gamut from recognizable but altered subjects to depictions that have almost no relationship to their original source. Nonrepresentational art can be seen as the antithesis of representational artwork in that it has absolutely no reference to the real world. \nOur minds are geared to make sense of the world through the library of images that we carry with us. But some things just can’t be conveyed in a visual manner using the narrative vocabulary of images. Artists in the modern era began to explore new concepts of artmaking using color\, shape\, line\, texture and space to express things which cannot be seen\, including feelings\, emotions or experiences. \nFrom the Mind’s Eye features approximately 30 thoughtful yet intuitive artworks selected from the Museum’s extensive permanent collection. The works date from the latter half of the 20th century to the present\, and convey a sensation or experience without the use of recognizable imagery. Some of these works express the simple desire to create for the sake of creation — and the beauty that results from that act—through mark making\, patterning or even mathematical design. As you explore the galleries\, try to open yourself up to what each artist may be attempting to communicate— from pressure and dread to joy and the infinite. There is no right or wrong interpretation! \nThe exhibition features 22 artists\, including Richard Anuszkiewicz\, Chryssa\, John Chamberlain\, Richard Diebenkorn\, Sol Le Witt\, Rocio Rodriguez and Richard Zoellner\, among others. A number of works on display have not been on public view in over 25 years. From the Mind’s Eye: Nonrepresentational Art from the Collection will continue in the Adtran\, Jurenko and Thurber galleries from August 22 – October 31\, 2021.

The Huntsville Museum of Art is pleased to present the latest version of this recurring exhibition\, showcasing artworks recently added to its permanent collection within the last year. Some were purchased for the collection\, while others were gifts from generous donors. Some works will be familiar to those who came to view some of our past exhibitions\, and others are by artists who are household names. All were carefully reviewed by the Museum’s Collections and Acquisitions Committee to fit the criteria established for the collection\, and are compatible with the Museum’s collecting objectives and goals. \nRecent acquisitions exhibitions are by nature a wonderful hodgepodge. Works of different styles and media are displayed together\, sometimes with no unifying characteristic other than the fact that they came into the collection within a given period of time. But these shows serve an important purpose – they demonstrate the scope of the Museum’s collecting interests and provide us the opportunity to acknowledge generous donors whose gifts help our collection grow.

Completed in 1973\, the towers stood at 110 stories each\, accommodating 50\,000 workers and 200\,000 daily visitors in a 10 million square foot space. They were the hub of the bustling Financial District\, a top tourist attraction and a symbol of America’s steadfast devotion to progress and the future. \nOn September 11\, 2001\, the Center became the target of a massive terrorist attack that took the lives of nearly 3\,000 people. The disaster also radically altered the city’s skyline\, destroying the twin columns of glass and steel that over the years had come to embody New York itself. \nOn the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks\, this exhibition looks back at the World Trade Center’s construction\, destruction\, and slow reemergence through 50 hand-selected photographs from the archives of The Associated Press. DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nUnder Pressure: Painting with Air\nA Survey of Contemporary Airbrush Realism\nSunday\, January 16 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view Under Pressure: A Survey of Contemporary Airbrush Realism. \nThe airbrush — a hand-held instrument that uses compressed air to spray paint in a controlled manner — was invented in the late 19th century. But it was not until the mid-20th century that it became a popular tool for artists and illustrators to create a high level of realism in their works. Pioneers of airbrushing include Surrealist Man Ray and graphic illustrator Alberto Vargas. Later\, Pop artist James Rosenquist used it to evoke the qualities of advertising in his work. As the century progressed\, airbrushing fell out of fashion. But following the 2008 release of Norman Hathaway’s book\, Overspray: Riding High with the Kings of Airbrush Art\, this deceptively arduous technique rose to fashion once again. \nUnder Pressure is a survey exhibition of contemporary realism by some fifteen exceptional airbrush artists from throughout the nation and beyond\, including photorealists Don Eddy\, Kirk Lybecker and Hisaya Taira; still life painter Cesar Santander; and abstract illusionist George Green\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nEncounters: Dean Mitchell\nSunday\, March 20 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view Encounters: Dean Mitchell. \nThe engaging works of this master watercolorist from Tampa\, FL encompass portraits\, landscapes and still lifes in the realist tradition. In addition to watercolor\, Mitchell is accomplished in other media including egg tempera\, oil and pastel. His reputation hinges largely on his superb craftsmanship\, the emotional depth of his work\, his avoidance of facile sentimentality\, and his skilled sense of formal design. The artist engages with Black Identity by drawing his subjects mainly from\nAfrican American culture. \nOf his preferred subject matter\, Mitchell notes\, “Artists are observers of life\, and it is natural that I would first gravitate to the space which I occupy. The neighborhoods I was raised in were segregated. Most of my teachers were Black. Churches I attended were Black\, so it is natural for me as an artist to create works that reflect my own personal experience.” \nBorn in Pittsburgh\, PA and reared in the small town of Quincy in the Florida Panhandle\, Mitchell is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus\, OH. He has won many prestigious awards over the course of his career\, and his work can be found in public collections across the country\, including the Library of Congress in Washington\, DC\, the St. Louis Museum of Art\, and the Huntsville Museum of Art\, among others. Drawn from the rich collections of the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York City\, Beauty\, Passion & Bliss features an outstanding selection of paintings and sculptures that embody the 19th-century European academic tradition. Originating in 16th-century Italy\, this tradition was based on learning to draw the human figure\, and in adhering to principals of ideal beauty epitomized by Classical and Renaissance art. \nThe exhibition features a surprisingly wide range of themes and styles. There are historical\, religious\, and mythological paintings\, considered the highest form of art\, as well as examples of the ways in which historical themes were transformed into intimate\, detailed genre scenes that\, along with landscapes and idealized rustic subjects\, appealed to wealthy and middle-class European and American collectors. Also well-represented is Orientalism — highly popular images of the Middle East and North Africa that freely commingled reality and fantasy. Organized by the Dahesh Museum of Art\, New York\, NY.

DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nEncounters: Aimee Perez\nSunday\, July 10 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view Encounters: Aimee Perez. \nMultidisciplinary artist Aimee Perez works with human forms – with their gestures and emotions\, lives and relationships – creating archetypes that transcend the context of their story. Through the exploration of contemporary\, religious and biblical themes\, she creates sculptures that explore the paradoxical truths of suffering and redemption\, grief and comfort. She works with various types of clays fired at high or low temperatures and surfaced with oxides washes\, slips\, terra sigillata\, engobes and glazes. She has also been known to layer her pieces with encaustic\, wax\, metals\, glass\, and found objects. Perez considers her work as her voice — a dialogue with the observer and simultaneously a self-exploration. \nAt age 12\, Perez left her native Cuba for the United States with her family through the Freedom Flights and grew up in Miami in a Cuban immigrant community. In 1989 she moved to Mexico City and continued painting and exhibiting with Cuban and Mexican artists\, absorbing influences of Mesoamerican art that continue to resonate in her production. Perez returned to Miami in 2006\, where she continues to work. Her works have been exhibited in national and international shows and is part of several collections in the United States and Mexico\, including the Huntsville Museum of Art. Organized by HMA.

DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nDorothea Lange’s America\nSunday\, August 7 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view Dorothea Lange’s America. \nThe Great Depression was a catalyst for a tremendous outburst of creative energy from America’s photographic community. The devastation wrought upon the country by the Depression inspired a host of socially conscious photographers to capture the many human stories of the time. Dorothea Lange’s America presents these stories with 30 photographs by Dorothea Lange as well as 25 additional works by 11 other photographers working during those troubled times\, including Walker Evans\, Ben Shawn\, Doris Ulmann and Marion Post Wolcott. Each used their cameras and the power of photography to effect positive change. \nPre-eminent among these photographers was Dorothea Lange (1895-1965). Her empathetic images documented the toll that the Depression took on the nation. The evidence was seen in the long lines of desperate\, jobless men\, migrant workers searching for work\, and impoverished families living in squalid conditions. Lange’s photographs made the human cost of the Depression personal by searing these images into America’s consciousness. Her most celebrated photographs of that era – Migrant Mother\, White Angel Breadline and Migratory Cotton Picker – have since become icons of the American experience.
