SUMMARY:Lecture and Preview Party: Beauty\, Passion and Bliss
DESCRIPTION:Lecture and Preview Party of Beauty\, Passion & Bliss: 19th Century Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art with Art Historian David Farmer\nSaturday\, March 26 | 6 – 8 p.m.\nTickets available Monday\, March 7\nMembers: $50 | Non-Members: $75\nJoin us in celebrating the opening of a new exhibition with a Lecture and Preview Party on Saturday\, March 26 at 6 p.m. \nDrawn from the rich collections of the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York City\, Beauty\, Passion & Bliss features an outstanding selection of paintings and sculptures that embody the 19th-century European academic tradition. Originating in 16th-century Italy\, this tradition was based on learning to draw the human figure\, and in adhering to principals of ideal beauty epitomized by Classical and Renaissance art. \nThe exhibition features a surprisingly wide range of themes and styles. There are historical\, religious\, and mythological paintings\, considered the highest form of art\, as well as examples of the ways in which historical themes were transformed into intimate\, detailed genre scenes that\, along with landscapes and idealized rustic subjects\, appealed to wealthy and middle-class European and American collectors. Also well-represented is Orientalism — highly popular images of the Middle East and North Africa that freely commingled reality and fantasy. Organized by the Dahesh Museum of Art\, New York\, NY.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: Encounters: Aimee Perez
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nEncounters: Aimee Perez\nSunday\, April 10 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, Encounters: Aimee Perez. \nMultidisciplinary artist Aimee Perez works with human forms – with their gestures and emotions\, lives and relationships – creating archetypes that transcend the context of their story. Through the exploration of contemporary\, religious and biblical themes\, she creates sculptures that explore the paradoxical truths of suffering and redemption\, grief and comfort. She works with various types of clays fired at high or low temperatures and surfaced with oxides washes\, slips\, terra sigillata\, engobes and glazes. She has also been known to layer her pieces with encaustic\, wax\, metals\, glass\, and found objects. Perez considers her work as her voice — a dialogue with the observer and simultaneously a self-exploration. \nAt age 12\, Perez left her native Cuba for the United States with her family through the Freedom Flights and grew up in Miami in a Cuban immigrant community. In 1989 she moved to Mexico City and continued painting and exhibiting with Cuban and Mexican artists\, absorbing influences of Mesoamerican art that continue to resonate in her production. Perez returned to Miami in 2006\, where she continues to work. Her works have been exhibited in national and international shows and is part of several collections in the United States and Mexico\, including the Huntsville Museum of Art. Organized by HMA.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: Dorothea Lange’s America
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nDorothea Lange’s America\nSunday\, May 15 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, Dorothea Lange’s America. \nThe Great Depression was a catalyst for a tremendous outburst of creative energy from America’s photographic community. The devastation wrought upon the country by the Depression inspired a host of socially conscious photographers to capture the many human stories of the time. Dorothea Lange’s America presents these stories with 30 photographs by Dorothea Lange as well as 25 additional works by 11 other photographers working during those troubled times\, including Walker Evans\, Ben Shawn\, Doris Ulmann and Marion Post Wolcott. Each used their cameras and the power of photography to effect positive change. \nPre-eminent among these photographers was Dorothea Lange (1895-1965). Her empathetic images documented the toll that the Depression took on the nation. The evidence was seen in the long lines of desperate\, jobless men\, migrant workers searching for work\, and impoverished families living in squalid conditions. Lange’s photographs made the human cost of the Depression personal by searing these images into America’s consciousness. Her most celebrated photographs of that era – Migrant Mother\, White Angel Breadline and Migratory Cotton Picker – have since become icons of the American experience. Organized by Art2Art Circulating Exhibitions\, Ann Arbor\, MI.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: Betty Grisham: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nBetty Grisham: A Celebration\nSunday\, July 3 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, Betty Grisham: A Celebration. \nThe Museum is pleased to have this opportunity to present a memorial exhibition of artworks by beloved Huntsville artist and arts advocate Betty Grisham\, who passed away last year at the venerable age of 99. A North Alabama native\, she earned her BA in Fine Art and Education at Montevallo College in 1942\, and MA in Fine Art Education from Columbia University Teachers College in 1945. After teaching and exhibiting in Atlanta and Birmingham\, she settled in Huntsville in 1963\, where she continued to experiment with textiles and the applied arts including needlepoint\, rug making and fabric design. Her unique garments for the commercial market were sold in New York and elsewhere\, and she founded a business designing custom hand painted and printed fabrics for interior design. Grisham also became an important advocate of the Huntsville Art League\, as well as a key supporter and patron of the Huntsville Museum of Art. She retired in the mid 1990s and continued to work from her home studio on paintings\, wall hangings and needlepoints for many years. \nGrisham’s art was often inspired by the colors and shapes of nature\, interpreted through her lively imagination and confident use of abstraction. She easily moved between bold drama and poetic restraint in her works\, and the Museum’s collection of 24 paintings\, textiles\, prints and collages exemplify her broad skill set. Her artworks are uniquely personal\, combining traditional handwork like embroidery and fabric dying with abstracted\, bold patterning. Reflecting upon what inspired her creativity\, the artist once said: “Winter’s fiery sunsets\, I see and enjoy them every day. Then I do drawings that become other works. Things that are growing — nature\, I come back to it more and more. Changes of the seasons and the subtlety of nature inspire my work. I have studied art history and see great value in all periods. Georgia O’Keeffe was an influence. Inspiration comes from many sources.”

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: A Beautiful Mess: Weavers and Knotters of the Vanguard
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nA Beautiful Mess: Weavers and Knotters of the Vanguard\nSunday\, July 24 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, A Beautiful Mess: Weavers and Knotters of the Vanguard. \nFrom micro artworks the size of your hand to mammoth room-sized installations\, the national roster of women artists in A Beautiful Mess push the boundaries of their textile-based medium. Using rope\, yarn\, clay and wire\, this group of conceptual artists knot and twist their media into sculptures that range from minimal and hyper-organized to utter pandemonium. They explore personal and political ideals — order and chaos to the extreme — and freely break the rules to create their beautiful artworks. Serious about making a strong cultural and intellectual impact\, this group deftly weaves their message into works that demonstrate extraordinary technical skill. \nArtists include Windy Chien\, Kira Dominguez Hultgren\, Kirsten Hassenfeld\, Dana Hemenway\, Dani Lopez\, Hannah Perrine Mode\, Liz Robb\, Katrina Sánchez Standfield\, Meghan Shimek\, Lisa Solomon and Jacqueline Surdell. SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: Encounters: Vadis Turner
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nEncounters: Vadis Turner\nSunday\, July 31 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, Encounters: Vadis Turner. \nAfter receiving her BFA and MFA at Boston University\, Nashville-born artist Vadis Turner became fascinated by the possibilities presented by traditional handicraft materials to define and contradict conventional gender roles. Her mixed media work began with a debutante gown made out of wax paper from her mother’s kitchen. She continues to create works that transcend the commonplace from its intended function into a vehicle for social commentary. She observes\, “Transforming domestic materials into contemporary art objects bonds me with ancestral forms of craft that determine a woman’s value\, sexual worth and cultural identity. My time\, like generations of women before me\, is judged by what I make with my hands.” \nThrough exhibitions and residencies in France\, the Czech Republic and Japan\, Turner has deepened her vocabulary and expanded her perception of women’s work. She is both reviving and reinventing a function for handmade objects in a society with progressively fewer hands-on activities. Organized by HMA.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: A World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nA World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection\nSaturday\, August 20 | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, A World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection. \nUtilizing works found within the Museum’s acclaimed permanent collection\, A World Within presents a diverse array of art by women that explores a range of media and subject matter with broad variation in style and method. \nTraditionally accepted feminine art practices are being embraced\, ignored\, or transformed\, as each artist sees fit\, across the spectrum of women’s art. Accordingly\, this exhibition examines some of the ways that female artists evolve their chosen mediums\, contemplate the world\, and represent themselves and other women. Throughout the exhibition there is a subtle duality at play\, encompassing both what is portrayed and the imagined world of the artist’s creation. The viewer is thus invited to consider the works on display in a complex way\, and to make unexpected connections throughout the galleries.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: 2023 Gala Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\n2023 Gala Art Exhibition\nSaturday\, Feb 4 | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, the 2023 Gala Art Exhibition. \nThe Gala is an important fundraiser for the Huntsville Museum of Art. The Gala Art Exhibition presents over 100 artworks in a range of media and styles\, to be auctioned to the highest bidder during the annual Gala event. This year’s featured artist is Lesley Powell. Organized by HMA. \nAbout Lesley Powell: \nLesley Powell finds inspiration in translating her own perception of a scene into a painting that involves the viewer and calls forth the viewer’s own responses.  Her subjects range from intimate still lifes and interiors to sweeping outdoor vistas. Powell works with a classical approach to color and composition\, but her point of view is fresh and contemporary. She eliminates extraneous details and focuses instead on the most compelling aspects of her subject. She uses simple but interesting shapes to convey these aspects. Lesley’s still-life paintings are sensitively observed in the quiet of her studio. Similarly\, her landscapes and interiors all originate from firsthand observation and work on location. Larger studio works spring from her in-person studies and sketches. \nLesley Powell lives in Charlotte\, NC\, but her easel accompanies her on travels far and wide. She has studied on an ongoing basis with internationally acclaimed artist Maggie Siner. Powell is represented by Huff Harrington Fine Art in Atlanta. Her work is also on her website: www.lesleypowellart.com.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: Encounters: Courtney Egan
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nEncounters: Courtney Egan\nSunday\, April 16 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the museum’s newest exhibition\, Encounters: Courtney Egan. New Orleans video artist Courtney Egan creates projection-based sculptural installations that meld nature with technology\, delivering an experience that is both pleasing and disconcerting. The ethereal projections – converging on walls\, floors and sculptural elements – are inspired by the growing frequency of human exposure to nature via computers or television. Egan creates stunning yet “subtly impossible\, hybrid tableaus” which envelop the viewer in a conversation between the memory of the natural world and a new experience with a plant or flower. She explains the fundamental irony of the experience\, stating\, “We get closer and farther away from the natural world simultaneously when we experience it through a technological lens.” Organized by HMA.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: The Artist Abroad
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nThe Artist Abroad\nSunday\, May 7 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy the museum’s newest exhibition\, The Artist Abroad. \nIn the decades following the U.S. Civil War\, many American artists eagerly flocked to Europe’s great art centers\, seeking inspiration\, patronage\, and formal artistic training. Traversing the continent and frequently settling in cities throughout Europe and the Mediterranean region\, these artists honed their formal techniques\, drawing upon the richness of Europe’s architecture\, ancient ruins\, and regional distinctions. \nThe Artist Abroad explores the artworks of American artists who traveled throughout France and Italy and\, later\, locations further south\, including Spain\, Greece\, North Africa\, and the region referred to as the Holy Lands – a route originally established by 17th and 18th-century travelers as part of The Grand Tour. This exhibition features paintings\, prints\, and drawings from the Huntsville Museum of Art’s permanent collection\, including artworks from the Sellars Collection of female artists\, as well as historic works by Old Master painters and sculptures that many American artists sought out while traveling. The Artist Abroad also includes a selection of contemporary photographs by members of the Huntsville Photographic Society that represent notions of modern-day tourism. \nThis exhibition is organized by the Huntsville Museum of Art.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: American Identity
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nAmerican Identity\nSunday\, June 11 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, American Identity. \nIn one word\, how would you describe yourself? How is the way you describe yourself different from how others describe you? \nIdentity is shaped\, formed\, and expressed in complex ways. For artists\, portraiture has long been a powerful visual tool for defining identity but\, for artists who live and work in the United States\, contending with notions of identity has been further complicated by the country’s complex\, often one-sided history. \nAmerican Identity features over thirty traditional\, symbolic\, and groundbreaking portraits from the Huntsville Museum of Art’s permanent collection. This timely exhibition includes a wide range of media\, examining the history of portraiture from the early 19th century to today\, and poses provocative questions about the very nature of likeness\, identity\, and representation. \nThis exhibition is organized by the Huntsville Museum of Art.

This exhibition presents an insightful gathering of approximately 60 prints by one of the great masters of the 20th Century\, Pablo Picasso. It provides a unique window into a significant era in art history and takes a serious look at the artist’s development and creative process. Best known for his paintings and sculptures\, Picasso was also a major innovator in the medium of printmaking. He made prints throughout his career — his first in 1899\, when he was still a teenager\, and his last in 1972\, when he was 90 years old. \nThe exhibition illustrates the three major phases of Picasso’s printmaking career\, as well as his signature artistic themes. A special feature of this collection is the number of proofs it contains. DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nThe Rise of Modernism: European Prints from the Permanent Collection\nSunday\, July 16 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, The Rise of Modernism: European Prints from the Permanent Collection. \nAfter the invention of photography\, printmaking as a medium was no longer utilitarian–required as a tool of preproduction–it could now be an artistic means for creativity\, expression\, and experimentation. \nThe Rise of Modernism highlights a selection of prints from the Museum’s permanent collection of European art and includes over 35 woodcuts\, etchings\, lithographs\, and aquatints dating between 1891 and 1977. Complementing the concurrent exhibition\, A Graphic Journey of prints by Pablo Picasso\, this exhibition presents the artworks of modern European painters Francisco Goya\, Joan Miró\, Henri Matisse\, Salvador Dalí\, and other noteworthy contemporaries to Picasso who also experimented with printmaking. SUMMARY:Lecture & Reception for A Graphic Journey: Prints by Pablo Picasso
DESCRIPTION:Lecture & Reception for A Graphic Journey: Prints by Pablo Picasso from the Dr. Timothy Collins Collection with Megan Fontanella\, Curator\, Modern Art and Provenance at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York\n\nYoung Picasso in Paris\nTuesday\, July 18 | 6 – 8 p.m.\nMembers: $70 | Non-Members: $100\nEnjoy an exclusive look at A Graphic Journey: Prints by Pablo Picasso from the Dr. Timothy Collins Collection. Megan Fontanella\, Curator\, Modern Art and Provenance at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York will lead the event with a lecture. \nA Graphic Journey presents an insightful gathering of approximately 60 prints by one of the great masters of the 20th Century\, Pablo Picasso. These proofs illustrate the unique working relationship Picasso maintained with his printers and their workshops\, and allow for close examination of the working process behind it. Organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions\, Los Angeles\, CA. \nAbout the Speaker:\nMegan Fontanella is Curator\, Modern Art and Provenance\, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York. Her research encompasses late nineteenth- through mid-twentieth-century European and U.S. avant-gardes\, with a particular focus on dealer networks and collecting patterns. Since joining the institution in 2005\, Fontanella has curated or co-organized over thirty exhibitions for the Guggenheim’s constellation of museums in Bilbao\, New York\, Venice\, and formerly Berlin\, as well as developed shows abroad for the traveling exhibitions program. \nTo mark the opening of the exhibition A Graphic Journey: Prints by Pablo Picasso at the Huntsville Museum of Art\, Guggenheim curator Megan Fontanella examines the artist’s initial forays into Paris as a young man and the impact of the contemporary subjects and styles he encountered there. Pablo Picasso (b. 1881\, Málaga\, Spain; d. 1973\, Mougins\, France) arrived in the city of light from Barcelona in autumn 1900\, during the final weeks of the Exposition Universelle. Though the nineteen-year-old Spaniard spoke little French\, he absorbed everything Paris had to offer over his initial two-month stay\, and again after his return to the capital the following spring through the end of 1901. Picasso patronized not only the art galleries\, but also the bohemian cafés\, raucous nightclubs\, and sensational dance halls that permeated his hilltop neighborhood of Montmartre. Le Moulin de la Galette (ca. November 1900)\, one of the artist’s first paintings in Paris and recently the subject of a conservation research and treatment project at the Guggenheim\, is a highlight from this pivotal juncture in the artist’s development. Picasso’s early work presages the social disenfranchisement that he brought into sharper relief in his subsequent Blue Period (1901–04) through his depictions of the exploited and vulnerable. On the precipice in 1900\, Picasso eventually crafted a singular practice reflective of his time. \nPresenting Sponsor:
