DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nRecent Acquisitions\nSunday\, July 18 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nThe Huntsville Museum of Art is pleased to present the latest version of this recurring exhibition\, showcasing artworks recently added to its permanent collection within the last year. Some were purchased for the collection\, while others were gifts from generous donors. Some works will be familiar to those who came to view some of our past exhibitions\, and others are by artists who are household names. All were carefully reviewed by the Museum’s Collections and Acquisitions Committee to fit the criteria established for the collection\, and are compatible with the Museum’s collecting objectives and goals. \nRecent acquisitions exhibitions are by nature a wonderful hodgepodge. Works of different styles and media are displayed together\, sometimes with no unifying characteristic other than the fact that they came into the collection within a given period of time. But these shows serve an important purpose – they demonstrate the scope of the Museum’s collecting interests and provide us the opportunity to acknowledge generous donors whose gifts help our collection grow.

Whyte’s WE THE PEOPLE\, which includes portraits of a Missouri dairy farmer\, Rhode Island lobsterman\, Pennsylvania science teacher\, South Carolina single mother\, and 46 other moving works\, is poised to become a national treasure honoring and connecting with men and women in uniform for generations to come. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a 136 page book\, containing 67 color and 50 black and white illustrations and published by University of South Carolina Press.

Organized by HMA. \nAmerican photographer Jack Mitchell (1925-2013) was renowned for his captivating photographs of visual artists\, film and theater personalities\, musicians\, and writers\, which he documented during a remarkable career that spanned over five decades. In addition to 25 years of special assignment work for The New York Times\, Mitchell’s photographs of creative and performing artists have graced the covers and pages of Harper’s Bazaar\, Life\, Newsweek\, People\, Rolling Stone\, Time\, Vanity Fair\, and Vogue\, among others. \nMitchell was both a portraitist and a capturer of complex motion. An expert in lighting\, he worked mostly\, though not entirely\, in black and white\, and was known — by his subjects\, by the magazine and newspaper editors he worked for\, and by critics — as someone who could make a photograph reveal character.

DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nGala 2021 Featured Artist: Millie Gosch\nSaturday\, April 10 | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, Gala 2021 Featured Artist: Millie Gosch. Millie Gosch is a highly accomplished and collectible artist. Her original oil paintings hang in the corporate offices of Synovus Bank\, Bank of America\, St Francis Hospital\, WellStar Health Systems\, and Price Waterhouse Coopers\, among others. Her work also hangs in many private collections. Millie is a prestigious Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society. \nAs a Plein Air painter at heart she gets inspiration leaving the four walls of her studio to work in a natural setting. Millie prefers painting from life outdoors\, and when not possible a still-life set up in the studio provides the inspiration. \nWhile some artists work from a photograph or memory\, plein air artists work from direct observation to paint in nature\, capturing their subject matter in real time. For Millie\, this way of working is both her passion and her calling. The studies she paints from life are then used as references to paint a much larger format in the studio. Her goal is to invite viewers into her painting to have their own experience. Her work is known for its vibrant use of color and texture. The beauty and quality of Millie’s work reflects her lifelong appreciation of nature and the outdoors. Growing up in a small Georgia town\, Millie developed a deep love for nature in general and particularly the South. As an artist\, her favorite subjects are Low Country and pastoral scenes. \nThroughout her life-long artistic journey Millie has drawn inspiration from not only her surroundings but also from artists whose work she admires. Granville Redmond\, Edgar Payne\,George Ennis\, and Winslow Homer are some of her favorite American painters. Contemporary favorites include Roger Dale Brown\, Ray Roberts\, Kendall Ward\, and Anne Blair Brown. Millie owns the City Muse Gallery in College Park\, GA. The space doubles as her studio and gallery. Studio visits are welcome and available by appointment.

DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nThe World of Frida\nSunday\, Feb. 28 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view The World of Frida. \nThe World of Frida celebrates the culture\, style\, and persona of visionary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)\, an artist who continues to inspire with her story of love\, adventure\, and pain. Celebrated globally today as an iconic\, renegade artist and outspoken feminist\, Kahlo’s life began perilously. Stricken with polio as a child\, and injured as a teenager in a bus accident that left her permanently disabled\, Kahlo was subjected to enormous pain and turmoil early in her life. While recovering from her accident\, Kahlo returned to her childhood hobby — painting. Soothed by the solace of art making\, it was during this period that she decided to become an artist. \nWhile Kahlo’s life was short-lived — she died at 47— her story continues to inspire artists of the 21st century. The 95 international artists featured in The World of Frida have reinterpreted many aspects of Kahlo’s life in an array of media — from honoring her self-portraits\, to depicting her love affair with Diego Rivera\, to recognizing her emotional\, physical\, professional and societal struggles. The exhibition is an incredible tribute to an artist who continues to influence millions by the simple fact that she was always true to herself\, no matter the cost. DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\n Will Henry Stevens: Naturalist/Modernist\nSunday\, February 7 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, Will Henry Stevens: Naturalist/Modernist. This exhibition presents the work of American artist Will Henry Stevens (1881-1949)\, a lifelong naturalist and important modernist painter known for his two distinct artistic styles: Representational Naturalism and Southern Modernism. Stevens clearly separated his two bodies of work\, exhibiting his rural Southern landscapes and his non-objective abstractions at different galleries. Though seemingly disconnected\, his individual styles are part of a larger whole. Each style was born from the soul of an artist strongly influenced by his reverence for the Southern landscape. \nAlthough born and raised in Indiana\, Stevens spent much of his adult life teaching in Louisiana and summering in western North Carolina. Those environs — particularly the rivers and bayous of New Orleans and the Southern Appalachian Mountains — inspired him to capture the changing landscapes in his colorful and lyrical works. Stevens absorbed diverse influences throughout his career\, including the writings of transcendentalist philosophers Whitman\, Thoreau\, and Emerson\, Chinese Sung Dynasty paintings\, and the art and writings of Wassily Kandinsky. Over his lifetime Stevens constantly experimented with styles and media\, but his work never lost its inextricable link to nature. Organized by HMA.

DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nImpressionist Landscapes from the Sellars Collection\nSunday\, January 31 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, Impressionist Landscapes from the Sellars Collection. With the acquisition of the Sellars Collection of Art by American Women in 2008\, an important holding of paintings\, drawings and sculptures was added to the Museum’s permanent collection. The Collection celebrates the achievements of American women artists active between 1850 and 1940\, and provides a counterpoint to the Museum’s holdings of regionally and nationally significant contemporary art. \nImpressionist Landscapes From the Sellars Collection focuses on the strong pull that the natural world had on American women artists during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition emphasizes the generation of artists who emerged during and in the aftermath of the American Impressionist movement (1880-1920). Many of these artists were the students and sketching partners of the seminal figures in the development of Impressionism in America\, such as William Merritt Chase\, Willard L. Metcalf\, John Henry Twachtman and Robert Henri.

The Elegant Vessel explores this essential form in various guises\, highlighting its inherent beauty as well as its capability to serve as a metaphor for extended meaning. \nThe exhibition includes historical and contemporary works from the Museum’s permanent collection in glass\, ceramic\, metal and wood — all traditional materials used to create functional vessels\, but transformed into fine art in the hands of their skilled makers. Featured artists include Shane Fero\, Benjamin Moore\, Robin Rodgers\, Rosanne Somerson\, and many more. With this exhibition we salute the enduring vessel in its many refined possibilities\, and thank those artists whose creative talents have expanded our appreciation and view of this familiar yet iconic form. DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nEncounters: Althea Murphy-Price\nSunday\, January 17 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nThe accomplished works of this mid-career printmaker and sculptor from Knoxville\, TN explore the links between individuality and assimilation\, and their influence on culture and personal identity. Murphy-Price often manipulates manufactured synthetic and human hair\, emphasizing its role as embellishment\, as well as its ability to signify racial identity. She explains\, “I am fascinated by the inexplicable link between the subject of hair and its influence on our social culture and personal identity. Much of my inspiration has derived from hair’s significant relevance to Black American culture and community.” Murphy-Price uses both hair and hair accessories to create prints and sculptural installations\, including signature Hair Rugs which are created by dusting synthetic hair over a lace overlays to create striking carpet-like patterns. \nMurphy-Price received her Master of Arts in printmaking and painting from Purdue University and earned her Master of Fine Arts at the Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. The World of Frida celebrates the culture\, style\, and persona of visionary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)\, an artist who continues to inspire with her story of love\, adventure\, and pain. Celebrated globally today as an iconic\, renegade artist and outspoken feminist\, Kahlo’s life began perilously. Stricken with polio as a child\, and injured as a teenager in a bus accident that left her permanently disabled\, Kahlo was subjected to enormous pain and turmoil early in her life. While recovering from her accident\, Kahlo returned to her childhood hobby — painting. Soothed by the solace of art making\, it was during this period that she decided to become an artist. \nWhile Kahlo’s life was short-lived — she died at 47— her story continues to inspire artists of the 21st century. The 95 international artists featured in The World of Frida have reinterpreted many aspects of Kahlo’s life in an array of media — from honoring her self-portraits\, to depicting her love affair with Diego Rivera\, to recognizing her emotional\, physical\, professional and societal struggles. The exhibition is an incredible tribute to an artist who continues to influence millions by the simple fact that she was always true to herself\, no matter the cost. Private Collection \nA mesmerizing photograph of Gloria Vanderbilt by Francesco Scavullo graced the cover of the November 2010 issue of Town & Country magazine with the caption\, “There will never be another Gloria Vanderbilt.” This statement speaks volumes about a woman who was in the public eye throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Many of us are aware of Gloria’s unsettling early childhood\, during which she was caught in the middle of a custody battle between her young\, absent mother\, Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt\, and her powerful aunt\, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. We know her from writings concerning her marriages\, romances\, and the tragic loss of her son\, Carter\, to suicide. And\, of course\, we know her from her fashion breakthrough in creating her signature designer jeans in 1978. \nBut who was Gloria Vanderbilt\, the designer\, and artist? Behind the effervescent ear to ear smile and poised images that were published in many social columns\, she was a complex\, vulnerable\, passionate\, emotional\, and extremely creative force. Gloria would spend hours each day in her studio\, choreographing her precious time between her easel and her writing desk. Her studio\, which was on the ground level in her apartment building on Beekman Place in New York City\, was her sanctuary where she would paint\, assemble her sculptures\, and pen her memoirs\, novels\, and short stories. Stopping briefly for lunch to enjoy a peanut butter sandwich\, she would return to her creations till 3:30 p.m. She felt the most comfortable in her studio\, relaxed and free to be herself. \nCocooned in this space\, at her easel and surrounded by tables laden with tubes of paint lined up in a row by shades of colors\, boxes of sharpened pastels\, containers filled with brushes\, and stacks of unfinished canvases lined up along the wall\, her imagination would take hold. Gloria concentrated very seriously and intensively on her art for over 75 years. When asked about the inspiration for her work\, Gloria stated\, “Often images are channeled in dreams\, which find expression in my paintings. They have a narrative quality\, which are shuffled around in the kaleidoscope of my imagination and find themselves in colors and patterns that sustain me. My memory is also a driving influence in my work. Memories I absorb and reinvent to changing effect because I have changed but do not want to let them go.” She further remarked\, “Color too intoxicates and inspires me\, as does the beauty of a person who has something I can’t quite catch. They become muses which I become obsessed to define\, to reveal something of their inner mystery\,” she added. \nIn 2012\, Gloria and Wendy Goodman\, author of The World of Gloria Vanderbilt\, accepted an invitation from a longtime friend\, Christopher Madkour\, Executive Director of the Huntsville Museum of Art\, to be the guest speakers at the Museums annual GALA Luncheon and Voices of Our Times event. During their visit to Huntsville\, Gloria and Wendy were presented with a Key to the City by Mayor Tommy Battle\, who extended an open invitation to return any time. Gloria’s stay in Huntsville was so memorable that she went on to host a fundraiser in New York for the Museum. The preview party for the World of Gloria Vanderbilt\, an exhibition of her paintings and sculptures at 1stdibs\, opened on September 12\, 2012\, to rave reviews. At that time\, Michael Bruno\, Founder of 1stdibs\, stated: “Regional museum like the Huntsville Museum of Art are making such a big impact on the art scene today. Gloria is a category unto herself. Her signature use of color astounds me in every work.” Gloria’s dear friend Nydia Caro reflected on her work\, “Gloria’s paintings were like Gloria’s world. Holographic\, layers\, and layers of dreams about her extraordinary life.”Patsy Haws\, Board member and guest at the party at 1stdibs\, reflects\, “Many of us were privileged with her generosity that weekend as so many doors were opened to us. \nIt was a“Cinderella” time\, but the real Cinderella was Gloria. She found her prince in her own spirit and art\, in her family and friends and never hesitated to share. Perhaps giving of herself was her greatest achievement.” Longtime friend\, Michael Lindsay-Hogg\, remarked\, “Gloria’s work has gone in many different directions\, has sustained\, and continues to surprise. Her palette has always been bright with varieties of pick\, red\, lavender\, yellow. In her work there is nothing of sentimentality\, even when the subjects are tender: a contented couple with two children in the background or a mother with a child or a woman in a hat. They\, and hundreds more\, have a power to them\, with a sense not of melancholy but of what the passage of time means\, of how the present will one day be a memory. The perfect example is her painting of a mother and child in her bold painting\, Memories.” Gloria’s creative legacy will stand the test of time\, and her support and contribution of the Huntsville Museum of Art will forever be remembered. \nThe Huntsville Museum of Art is honored to present this exclusive boutique exhibition which not only features memorable photographs of Vanderbilt by Horst\, Jonathan Becker\, Adrián Villeta\, Annie Leibovitz\, and Jack Mitchell\, but also a selection of Vanderbilt’s own artworks\, as well as memorabilia documenting Vanderbilt’s recent association with the Huntsville Museum of Art. DESCRIPTION:Opening Day of Jonathan Becker: Social Work – Four Decades of Movers\, Shakers & Thinkers\nOctober 30 | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.\n \nAmerican photographer Jonathan Becker began contributing to Vanity Fair magazine on the heels of an especially successful solo exhibition in Chelsea in 1981. His portraits of filmmaker Louis Malle and of his mentor and friend Brassaï featured largely in the pages of prototype for the magazine’s relaunch in 1983. Becker’s specialty in portraits\, photographed by and large on location\, soon became a Vanity Fair staple: Robert Mapplethorpe\, Jack Kevorkian\, Jocelyn Wildenstein\, and Martha Graham\, as well as countless socialites \, artists\, and heads of state. \nAssignments for the magazine have dispatched Becker far and wide – from the Amazonian jungle\, for first-encounter photographs of members of the Yanomami tribe\, to Buckingham Palace\, for the first photographs showing the Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles together. Becker’s association with Vanity Fair continues to this day. Becker has also contributed portraits and reportage to Town & Country\, The New Yorker\, Vogue\, W\, The Paris Review\, and many other publications. \nThis exhibition features 45 images of movers\, shakers and thinkers taken by Becker between 1976 and 2015\, hand selected by the Museum\, including artists\, authors\, fashion designers\, socialites\, Hollywood celebrities\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Opening Day of About Face: Portraits from the Collection\nSunday\, October 11 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. \n \nEnjoy a first look at the Museum’s new exhibition\, About Face: Portraits from the Collection. A portrait is typically defined as a representation of a specific individual\, such as the artist might meet in life. A portrait does not merely record someone’s features\, however\, but says something about who he or she is\, offering a vivid sense of a real persons’ presence. \nThe traditions of portraiture in the West extend back to antiquity and particularly to ancient Greece and Rome\, where lifelike depictions of distinguished men and women appeared in sculpture and on coins. In the Middle Ages\, generic representations were the norm\, after which distinctive portrait likenesses began to reappear in Renaissance Europe. This change reflected a new growth of interest in everyday life and individual identity that continued into the mid-twentieth century. In subsequent decades\, portraiture was considered to be old-fashioned\, but the genre has once again assumed a central role in contemporary art. Today’s artists are increasingly turning to portraiture as a major vehicle for expression\, often to address issues of identity\, gender\, race and class. \nAudiences have always been fascinated with the art of portraiture\, whether it’s Leonardo’s Mona Lisa or Andy Warhol’s iconic image of Marilyn Monroe. About Face: Portraits from the Collection presents a wide variety of portraits from the Museum’s own holdings\, spanning over two hundred years in time and encompassing a range of subjects that include nobles and commoners; men and women; and adults and children. Stylistically varied as well\, the exhibition features classical portraits\, abstractions\, and folk art renderings. Look for selections from the Sellars Collection of Art by American Women; an array of antebellum Alabama family portraits; and intriguing contemporary works by regional artists Gaela Erwin\,  Aron Belka and Pinky Bass\, among the highlights.

Pearsall) \nStacy Pearsall got her start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During three combat tours\, she earned the Bronze Star Medal and Air Force Commendation with Valor. She is one of only two women to win the National Press Photographer’s Association Military Photographer of the Year competition\, and the only woman to have won it twice. Though combat disabled and retired from military service\, Pearsall has not let her disabilities hold her back. With her service animal Charlie by her side\, she continues to work worldwide as an independent photographer and is an author\, educator\, military consultant\, public speaker and founder of the Veteran’s Portrait Project. This exhibition presents 45 works highlighting Pearsall’s combat photography as well as selections from her award-winning series\, The Veteran’s Portrait Project. DESCRIPTION:Ladson – Spartan\, 32 x 41.5 \nEncounters: Charles Ladson focuses on the accomplished paintings of this mid-career artist from Macon\, GA. Ladson’s works mix conventional aspects of painting like texture\, layering\, perspective\, transparency\, and detail — to create images that evoke a sense of mystery and dreamlike reality. Like much Southern art\, his paintings have a strong narrative component. Ladson received his BFA degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York and his MFA degree from the University of Georgia. DESCRIPTION:Public Enemy\, 1987\, archival vintage exhibition print\, 13 x 19 in. (frame to 24 x 30 in.) \nThis exhibition features 36 hand-selected silver gelatin and color photographs of important African American artists and performers taken by Jack Mitchell over a career spanning five decades. Mitchell died in 2013 at age 88. His first cover photograph for a major magazine was of Haitian dancers for the May 1951 issue of Color Magazine. Museum Purchase in Memory of Amanda and Margaret Lawson \nSome of the earliest evidence of human art suggests that people told stories with pictures\, and narrative art can be found across nearly every culture and time period in human history. Telling Tales presents historical and contemporary works from the Museum’s collection that bring to light how stories can be told through different media\, styles and time periods. Works of many different types will co-exist in the galleries for viewers to compare\, contemplate\, and discuss.
