DESCRIPTION:Opening Day of About Face: Portraits from the Collection\nSunday\, October 11 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. \n \nEnjoy a first look at the Museum’s new exhibition\, About Face: Portraits from the Collection. A portrait is typically defined as a representation of a specific individual\, such as the artist might meet in life. A portrait does not merely record someone’s features\, however\, but says something about who he or she is\, offering a vivid sense of a real persons’ presence. \nThe traditions of portraiture in the West extend back to antiquity and particularly to ancient Greece and Rome\, where lifelike depictions of distinguished men and women appeared in sculpture and on coins. In the Middle Ages\, generic representations were the norm\, after which distinctive portrait likenesses began to reappear in Renaissance Europe. This change reflected a new growth of interest in everyday life and individual identity that continued into the mid-twentieth century. In subsequent decades\, portraiture was considered to be old-fashioned\, but the genre has once again assumed a central role in contemporary art. Today’s artists are increasingly turning to portraiture as a major vehicle for expression\, often to address issues of identity\, gender\, race and class. \nAudiences have always been fascinated with the art of portraiture\, whether it’s Leonardo’s Mona Lisa or Andy Warhol’s iconic image of Marilyn Monroe. About Face: Portraits from the Collection presents a wide variety of portraits from the Museum’s own holdings\, spanning over two hundred years in time and encompassing a range of subjects that include nobles and commoners; men and women; and adults and children. Stylistically varied as well\, the exhibition features classical portraits\, abstractions\, and folk art renderings. Look for selections from the Sellars Collection of Art by American Women; an array of antebellum Alabama family portraits; and intriguing contemporary works by regional artists Gaela Erwin\,  Aron Belka and Pinky Bass\, among the highlights.

DESCRIPTION:Robin Robinson\, ArmyE-5 Logistics and Procurement 1977-1991\, Gulf War\, Multi National Forces EgyptVeterans Portrait Project\, Louisville\, KYVFW Convention(Photos by Stacy L. Pearsall) \nStacy Pearsall got her start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During three combat tours\, she earned the Bronze Star Medal and Air Force Commendation with Valor. She is one of only two women to win the National Press Photographer’s Association Military Photographer of the Year competition\, and the only woman to have won it twice. Though combat disabled and retired from military service\, Pearsall has not let her disabilities hold her back. With her service animal Charlie by her side\, she continues to work worldwide as an independent photographer and is an author\, educator\, military consultant\, public speaker and founder of the Veteran’s Portrait Project. This exhibition presents 45 works highlighting Pearsall’s combat photography as well as selections from her award-winning series\, The Veteran’s Portrait Project. DESCRIPTION:CLA Cristallerie – Lamp with fish\, circa 1927-1930\, Press-molded glass on fabricated metal base\, 8 1/4 x 9 x 5 in. \nCharacterized by smooth lines\, geometric shapes\, and bright colors\, the Art Deco glass movement began\, in part\, as a reaction against the elaborate and ornate style of Art Nouveau in the late 19th century. Art Deco Glass from the Huchthausen Collection includes over 100 works in glass from the collection of studio glass artist David Huchthausen. The exhibition features early 20th-century glass by iconic Art Deco studios such as René Lalique\, Daum Frères\, Pierre d’Avesn\, Charles Schneider\, Muller Frères\, Marius-Ernest Sabino\, Steuben Glass Works\, and many others. DESCRIPTION:This exclusive exhibition features approximately 35 original works by three of America’s most celebrated and beloved artists — master illustrators Maxfield Parrish\, Norman Rockwell\, and N.C. Wyeth. The stories these artists tell are well-known parts of American history. Parrish used the works of old masters to create his stories\, saying that he used paintings to create his own “world of make-believe.” Rockwell created the small-town America that we all love with his very personal paintings. Wyeth\, the father of artist Andrew Wyeth\, carved out a rich legacy of historical work\, especially his paintings of the West and of Native Americans that illustrated stories in Scribner’s magazines and books. DESCRIPTION:Ladson – Spartan\, 32 x 41.5 \nEncounters: Charles Ladson focuses on the accomplished paintings of this mid-career artist from Macon\, GA. Ladson’s works mix conventional aspects of painting like texture\, layering\, perspective\, transparency\, and detail — to create images that evoke a sense of mystery and dreamlike reality. Like much Southern art\, his paintings have a strong narrative component. Ladson received his BFA degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York and his MFA degree from the University of Georgia. (frame to 24 x 30 in.) \nThis exhibition features 36 hand-selected silver gelatin and color photographs of important African American artists and performers taken by Jack Mitchell over a career spanning five decades. Mitchell died in 2013 at age 88. His first cover photograph for a major magazine was of Haitian dancers for the May 1951 issue of Color Magazine. Exhibition highlights include singer-songwriter Harry Belafonte\, singer Whitney Houston (in her first photo session with a professional photographer)\, dance company founder Alvin Ailey\, writer Toni Morrison\, singer Roberta Flack\, soprano Leontyne Price\, hip hop group Public Enemy\, singer Donna Summer\, actress Cicely Tyson\, and actor Ben Vereen.

DESCRIPTION:The Huntsville Museum of Artis pleased to present the sixth installment of its exhibition series focused on contemporary artists linked in terms of subject matter and sensibility. The latest installment of this series features two artists from New Orleans whose works revolve around themes of childhood\, nature\, innocence\, and loss. Stephen Paul Day creates skillfully executed paintings and sculptures that are whimsical and charming\, reflecting aspects of his boyhood as well as folktale symbolism. Sibylle Peretti creates glass sculptures and multimedia collages which combine photography and drawing with surface techniques such as engraving\, mirroring\, and glass slumping. Small’s paintings on panel and vellum often feature flowers floating in ethereal spaces and Southern homes existing in ambiguity. Essentially self-taught\, Small’s ability to detail exactly what he sees is one of his greatest talents. He describes his practice as\, “…trying to accomplish a dreamlike state. I’m imagining other people’s memories — fading\, but still there.” Small harnesses a style similar to magical realism\, with the center of each painting focused on a painstakingly accurate image while the background dissolves into abstract elements. This technique allows the artist to hypnotize the viewer into a dream-like state\, caught between the realities of the obvious and the mysteries that seem to exist beneath the surface. DESCRIPTION:On Display Now – August 5\, 2018 \nThis exhibition of thematic watercolor paintings by Tennessee artist Alan Shuptrine pays tribute to the land and people found along the Appalachian Trail\, and of the distinctive culture that endures from the mountains of Maine to Georgia. The body of work celebrates the connections of Appalachia with its historical and cultural counterpart in the British Isles\, highlighting Celtic traditions that were brought to America in the 18th century and are still practiced in the region today. The paintings are ornamented with Shuptrine’s hand-carved frames\, many of which are embedded with serpentine\, a mineral that is found not only along the entire Appalachian Trail\, but also in the regions of the British Isles where the original settlers to Appalachia were born. He also served as Vice President of Huntsville Operations for Orbital Sciences Corporation for 10 years. \nDavid Reel is a nationally recognized expert in the Museum field with a particular emphasis on the fine Arts and a specialty in american nineteenth century landscape painting and military portraiture. DESCRIPTION:Join the artists for a thought-provoking gallery walk on Sunday\, December 3\,\nand learn more about the fascinating connections in their works. \nThe Huntsville Museum of Art is pleased to present the fifth installment of its new Connections exhibition series focused on contemporary artists linked in terms of subject matter and sensibility. Connections: Hoss Haley | George Peterson | Tom Shields showcases three artists from Western North Carolina who recycle and transform discarded materials into stunning works of art.  Hoss Haley crumples and reassembles sheets of metal stripped from old appliances into stunning modernist forms and is regionally acclaimed for his striking works in steel\, concrete and bronze.  Self-taught artist\, George Peterson\, carves and paints scrapped skateboard decks\, changing them into primitive\, handcrafted wall artifacts. Tom Shields has been working with wood for nearly twenty years.  He explores furniture as a subject rather than an object\, melding old and broken chairs and tables into complex visual forms with potent narrative potential.

DESCRIPTION:Curator’s Viewpoint with HMA Director of Curatorial Affairs\, Peter Baldaia\nSunday\, November 19\nLecture: 2 p.m.\nReception: 3 p.m.\nFree to Museum members/ Included with general admission \nThe art of cutting paper dates back thousands of years\, with early artworks coming from 6th century China. Originally a decorative handcraft for women\, Chinese paper-cutting eventually expanded into rural areas\, becoming a staple at religious ceremonies and festivals. By the 14th century\, paper-cutting spread to the rest of the world bringing in a new wave of folk art traditions. Cut Up/Cut Out honors both innovation and tradition with a selection of over 50 artists representing diverse styles and techniques by taking a contemporary view of an ancient art practice that has evolved over thousands of years. \nCut Up/Cut Out is an exhibition of local\, national and international artists who explore the captivating methods of decorative piercing and cutting\, using a wide range of media from paper and plastic to metal and rubber. The transformative nature of cutting into and through a surface provides endless possibilities for converting the material from opaque to transparent\, from flat to sculptural\, from rigid to delicate\, and from ordinary to exquisite. The process and precision required for this method of art-making is laborious\, technically demanding and always astonishing. \nVisually diverse\, the artworks in Cut Up/Cut Out range in size from an intimate three inches to sprawling and complex installations\, and they represent an abundance of conceptual ideas. The artists address our relationship with nature and environmental issues\, personal and political narratives\, architecture\, fantasy\, and abstract or formal ideas—with many intersections. \nThis show features several large scale installations including: Margaret Griffith’s Coringa\, a hand-cut\, 12 foot long paper artwork that cascades from the ceiling\, Adriane Colburn’s expansive multimedia piece Forest for the Trees\, and a site–specific\, interactive installation by Los Angeles artist Rebecca Niederlander.  Cut Up/Cut Out also includes a group of artists who are drawn to cutting into unique or unusual materials such as tires\, oil drums\, and leaves. \nThe curator of this exhibition\, Carrie Lederer\, was inspired by Bay Area artist\, Irene Pijoan’s (1953-2004) groundbreaking large-scale cut paper artwork and has dedicated Cut Up/Cut Out to her memory.  Cut Up/Cut Out is a traveling exhibition that was organized by the Bedford Gallery and will travel nationally through 2020.
