DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk and Reception with Dean Mitchell\nThursday\, March 10\, 2022 | 6 – 8 p.m.\nMembers: $25 | Non-Members: $50\nDean Mitchell\, the current Encounters artist\, will be leading an artist talk of his exhibition on Thursday\, March 10 at 6 p.m.\, followed by a reception. \nThe engaging works of this master watercolorist from Tampa\, FL encompass portraits\, landscapes and still lifes in the time-honored realist tradition. In addition to watercolor\, Mitchell is accomplished in other media including egg tempera\, oil and pastel. His reputation hinges largely on his superb craftsmanship\, the emotional depth of his work\, his avoidance of facile sentimentality\, and his skilled sense of formal design. \nMitchell engages with Black Identity by drawing his subjects mainly from African American culture. Of his preferred subject matter\, he notes\, “Artists are observers of life\, and it is natural that I would first gravitate to the space which I occupy. The neighborhoods I was raised in were segregated. Most of my teachers were Black. Churches I attended were Black\, so it is natural for me as an artist to create works that reflect my own personal experience.”

Originating in 16th-century Italy\, this tradition was based on learning to draw the human figure\, and in adhering to principals of ideal beauty epitomized by Classical and Renaissance art. \nThe exhibition features a surprisingly wide range of themes and styles. There are historical\, religious\, and mythological paintings\, considered the highest form of art\, as well as examples of the ways in which historical themes were transformed into intimate\, detailed genre scenes that\, along with landscapes and idealized rustic subjects\, appealed to wealthy and middle-class European and American collectors. DESCRIPTION:Gallery Walk and Reception for Encounters: Aimee Perez\nSunday\, April 10 | 2 p.m.\nIncluded with admission and free for members\nJoin us in celebrating the opening of a new exhibition\, Encounters: Aimee Perez\, with a gallery walk and reception at 2 p.m. on opening day. \nMultidisciplinary artist Aimee Perez works with human forms – with their gestures and emotions\, lives and relationships – creating archetypes that transcend the context of their story. Through the exploration of contemporary\, religious and biblical themes\, she creates sculptures that explore the paradoxical truths of suffering and redemption\, grief and comfort. She works with various types of clays fired at high or low temperatures and surfaced with oxides washes\, slips\, terra sigillata\, engobes and glazes. She has also been known to layer her pieces with encaustic\, wax\, metals\, glass\, and found objects. Perez considers her work as her voice — a dialogue with the observer and simultaneously a self-exploration. \nAt age 12\, Perez left her native Cuba for the United States with her family through the Freedom Flights and grew up in Miami in a Cuban immigrant community. In 1989 she moved to Mexico City and continued painting and exhibiting with Cuban and Mexican artists\, absorbing influences of Mesoamerican art that continue to resonate in her production. Perez returned to Miami in 2006\, where she continues to work. Her works have been exhibited in national and international shows and is part of several collections in the United States and Mexico\, including the Huntsville Museum of Art. Organized by HMA.

Jessica has a three-year-old who helps her see the world anew. She is married to an artist\, who is also a high school art educator. She is an active member of the art community and has had her work exhibited around the South. She is a member of the Rocket City Roller Derby team\, Huntsville’s Flat Track Roller Derby Team. Regarding teaching\, she has been an educator with Huntsville City Schools since 2011. She has taught the following courses over the years: Art I\, Drawing I/II\, Photo I/II\, Painting I/II\, AP Studio Art 2-D design\, AP Drawing\, Ceramic I/II\, Magnet II and Magnet IV. She currently teaches Ceramic I and Ceramic II and has been doing so for a few years now. During her undergraduate and graduate degree at UAB\, she completed a concentration in Ceramics\, Painting and Photography. She loves art and sharing the knowledge she has acquired over the years. Advocating for the arts and helping other grow their appreciation for the art is a life-long passion of Jessica’s. She currently the program director of the Visual Art Magnet at Lee High School. \nJessica Patmon was raised in Clay\, Alabama. She received her Bachelors in Studio Arts with a concentration in painting\, photography and ceramics with a Minor in Secondary Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2009. She later earned her Master’s in Art Education from UAB. Jessica’s work has been featured in the following exhibitions: 37th Annual Bi State Exhibition in Mississippi\, Alumni Show at the University of Alabama at Birmingham\, and the Juried Art Teacher Biennial at the Huntsville Museum of Art. \n“My work illustrates the disentanglement of personal and social struggles dealing with standards of female identity in the South. My work narrates both the objective and perceived reality of my childhood memories that have since been reinterpreted. The recognition of human behavior and interaction\, combined with specific imagery\, evoke a sense of personal identity and authenticity within my art.”

DESCRIPTION:Gallery Walk and Reception for Encounters: Vadis Turner\nSunday\, July 31 | 2 p.m.\nIncluded with admission and free for members.\nJoin us in celebrating the opening of a new exhibition\, Encounters: Vadis Turner\, with a gallery walk and reception. \nAfter receiving her BFA and MFA at Boston University\, Nashville-born artist Vadis Turner became fascinated by the possibilities presented by traditional handicraft materials to define and contradict conventional gender roles. Her mixed media work began with a debutante gown made out of wax paper from her mother’s kitchen. She continues to create works that transcend the commonplace from its intended function into a vehicle for social commentary. She observes\, “Transforming domestic materials into contemporary art objects bonds me with ancestral forms of craft that determine a woman’s value\, sexual worth and cultural identity. My time\, like generations of women before me\, is judged by what I make with my hands.” \nThrough exhibitions and residencies in France\, the Czech Republic and Japan\, Turner has deepened her vocabulary and expanded her perception of women’s work. She is both reviving and reinventing a function for handmade objects in a society with progressively fewer hands-on activities. DESCRIPTION:Gallery Walk and Reception for Encounters: Courtney Egan\nSunday\, April 16 | 2 p.m.\nIncluded with admission and free for members\nJoin us in celebrating the opening of a new exhibition\, Encounters: Courtney Egan with a gallery walk and reception at 2 p.m. on opening day. \nNew Orleans video artist Courtney Egan creates projection-based sculptural installations that meld nature with technology\, delivering an experience that is both pleasing and disconcerting. The ethereal projections – converging on walls\, floors and sculptural elements – are inspired by the growing frequency of human exposure to nature via computers or television. Egan creates stunning yet “subtly impossible\, hybrid tableaus” which envelop the viewer in a conversation between the memory of the natural world and a new experience with a plant or flower. She explains the fundamental irony of the experience\, stating\, “We get closer and farther away from the natural world simultaneously when we experience it through a technological lens.” Organized by HMA.

The history of the origin of the lectures explains why the explanation of the symbols is virtually the same throughout English Freemasonry. A recitation of the non-secret portions of the Entered Apprentice Lecture will be given. This presentation is part of educational programming in conjunction with the Mystery and Benevolence: Masonic and Odd Fellows Folk Art from the American Folk Art Museum exhibition. \nMystery and Benevolence: Masonic and Odd Fellows Folk Art from the American Folk Art Museum was organized by the American Folk Art Museum\, New York\, NY from the Kendra and Allan Daniel Collection and is toured by International Arts & Artists\, Washington\, DC. \n   \nAbout Michael Feld: \nMichael Feld\, Chairman of the Grand Lodge of Alabama Free and Accepted Masons Public Relations and Education Committee\nPast Master of Helion Lodge #1\nPast District Lecturer of Madison County\n33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason\nKnight York Cross of Honor\nGrand Governor of Alabama for the York Rite Sovereign College of North America \nMr. Feld was born in Decatur\, Alabama and grew up in Huntsville\, Alabama. He is a graduate of Lee High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting and MBA from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He currently resides in Madison\, Alabama and is married to his wife Jenni with whom he has two daughters. \nHe was initiated at Helion Lodge #1 in November 1998 and raised to the degree of Master Mason in July 1999. He served as Worshipful Master of Helion Lodge in 2009. In 2012\, he was the first Alabama recipient of the General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons International Ritual Award. In 2014\, he received the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Alabama Fred W. Vaughn Masonic Award for Community Service. He also received the Knights Templar Cross of Honor from the Grand Commandery of Alabama. In 2015\, he received the Cryptic Mason of the Year Award from the General Grand Council of Cryptic Masons International. In 2017\, he received the Companion of the Secret Vault honor. He served on the Ritual Committee for the General Grand Council of Cryptic Masons International. He has published several articles in the Ad Lucem\, the Royal Arch Magazine\, and the Knights Templar magazine.

Docents will be leading two tours of this exhibition for our Members. Take a deep dive during your preview day by attending a tour at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. \nBorn and raised in Lebanon\, Rania Matar moved to the United States in 1984. She has dedicated her work to exploring issues of personal and collective identity through photographs of female adolescence and adulthood. Matar works both in the United States and the Middle East in an effort to focus on notions of identity and individuality within the context of the underlying universality of these experiences. \nSHE features 50 large-scale color images of young women in their 20s—the ages of Matar’s own daughters—leaving the cocoon of home and transitioning into womanhood. In earlier projects\, Matar photographed young women in relation to the controlled environment of their bedrooms. Here\, she captures them in the larger arena they find themselves in after leaving home—the global and complicated backdrop that now constitutes their lives in transition. Grant Kirkpatrick will lead the event with a lecture. \nReforestation of the Imagination combines traditional sculpture with augmented reality (AR). By using technology to overlay digital information onto sculptural objects\, two disparate environments are portrayed. \nThe setting is an apocalyptic landscape far in the future. The initial environment consists of five landmasses\, which support the glass stumps. Except for the painted shelf mushrooms and tree rings on the stumps and logs\, the scene is colorless. The landmasses surround a sixth rocky outcropping that features a large fiberglass stump. The central stump sprouts beautifully grotesque bronze\, then glass appendages. This improbable growth has survived the devastation to create a new botany. \n“Other than the central stump\, the landscape appears at first glance to be barren. Yet\, upon viewing the tree rings aided by AR technology a second environment is revealed. Plants appear (both fruit and flowers) which have evolved from existing flora. They have developed dramatic appendages and the skills necessary to adapt and flourish in this radically different environment. From accessing nutrients in ways that symbiotically improve their surrounding conditions\, to cultivating protections from new threats\, these adaptations are unexpected\, beautiful\, and optimistic. This is nature reimagining itself. The imagination cannot be exterminated. It just recreates itself.” —Ginny Ruffner \nAbout the Artist: \nSeattle-based artist Ginny Ruffner trained at the University of Georgia\, graduating with honors and an MFA in drawing and painting. Ruffner has had more than eighty five solo exhibitions and several hundred group shows\, and her flameworked and mixed-media sculptures and installations can be found in numerous national and international collections. Seattle public art installations include a 30 foot tall kinetic water feature downtown and a permanent installation in the Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park. Recent augmented reality projects\, in collaboration with Grant Kirkpatrick\, include Weston Riff at Photo Center NW; Branches at Seattle International Film Festival; and Poetic Hybrids at the Seattle Art Museum. She has written two books and been the subject of an award-winning full-length documentary\, A Not So Still Life: The Ginny Ruffner Story (2010). Ruffner has lectured and taught extensively and has served as artist-inresidence at schools and universities around the world. \nGrant Kirkpatrick is an emerging animator and new media artist based in Seattle. After studying at Cornish College of the Arts for three years\, he graduated with a focus on motion design and animation. Coming from a fine arts background\, Kirkpatrick has considerable interest in the intersection of art and technology\, particularly VR/AR\, game design\, and mixed-media work. \nGinny Ruffner: Reforestation of the Imagination is organized by the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jeffrey Forgeng\, Curator of Arms and Armor and Medieval Art at the Worcester Art Museum\, will lead the event with a lecture. \nFrom the warriors of ancient Greek legends\, to the knights of the Middle Ages\, to the superheroes of today’s popular culture\, the idea of personal body armor has an enduring hold on the human imagination. Armor is as old as human civilization\, and has been used in various forms in societies around the globe\, but full suits of articulated steel plates were made only in Europe\, and only for a brief time in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. This exhibition explores the story of armor in its golden age. \nSuits of armor are among the most popular objects with museumgoers\, but there are few significant collections of armor in the Americas. In 2014\, the Worcester Art Museum acquired the Higgins Armory Collection. While most of this rare collection is in storage awaiting the creation of a dedicated arms and armor gallery\, there is a unique opportunity to share these objects with a national and international public. Visitors will discover the diverse and often surprising stories embedded in these powerful objects. Far from the ungainly exoskeleton we often imagine today\, the suit of armor was made to be sleek and stylish—painstakingly engineered\, elegantly designed\, and treasured as the expression of its owner’s taste\, sophistication\, and prowess. \nThis exhibition was organized by the Worcester Art Museum.

For the 2019 Venice Biennial\, Agha was included in a collateral event\, She Persists\, with 22 contemporary feminist artists. The retrospective Interwoven will travel to Wichita Museum of Art and two other museums in 2025/2026. Agha attended the Joan Mitchell Center Residency in New Orleans\, LA. Her work has been collected by both institutions and private collectors\, nationally and internationally. \n
