SUMMARY:VOICES of OUR TIMES with Billy Reid\, Fashion Designer: A Modern Southern Studio
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Billy Reid\nAward Winning Fashion Designer\nThursday\, June 20\, 2024\n5:30PM • Cocktails | 6:30 PM • Lecture and Discussion | 7:30 PM • Dinner\nLoretta Spencer Hall\n \nTickets are available for purchase for Members on May 7th\, 2024\, and for Non-Members\, May 28th. \n\n\n*Note: All ticket sales are final. Valet parking will be available\, but they have limited spaces open.\n\nBilly Reid – June 20\, 2024 \n\nBilly Reid grew up in Amite\, a small town in southern Louisiana. His mom owned a women’s boutique that was located in his grandmother’s old house\, and that had a big impact on the way hospitality is portrayed in his shops today. Reid went to the Art Institute of Dallas and worked his way through school at Saks Fifth Avenue. He later moved to Los Angeles\, New York\, and Boston during a six-year career with Reebok where he helped them pioneer their Greg Norman Golf Collections. He launched his own collection in 1998 under the label William Reid\, which had critical success and CFDA award recognition. Things were really taking off with that collection until he held a New York Fashion Week runway show on September 10th\, 2001\, a day before the 9/11 attacks. Everything eventually unraveled\, ultimately closing that business. In the aftermath\, Reid and his family moved to his wife’s hometown of Florence\, Alabama\, to reset life. After years of struggling\, he relaunched his brand in 2004 under the label Billy Reid. He had a vision that an American Fashion House can be based in the Deep South\, outside of the usual New York\, Paris\, and Milan fashion centers. Nearly 20 years later\, he has seen that vision through\, and he continues to build and create from Florence\, AL.

SUMMARY:Voices of Our Times with P. Allen Smith
DESCRIPTION:Voices of Our Times with P. Allen Smith\nThursday\, September 9\, 2021\nLunch\, Talk\, and Book Signing | 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.\nMembers $100 | Non-Members $130\nP. Allen Smith\, often described as one of America’s most talented garden designers\, is the product of five generations of southern nurserymen. Mr. Smith’s family imbued him at an early age with an appreciation and love of the land. His passions were further directed at Hendrix College where he received a B.A. with an emphasis in Biology and History and then formalized in the classroom and by experience in England. During his time in Cheshire\, Smith retraced the route\, 200 years to the day\, of Thomas Jefferson and John Adam’s famous tour of important English country homes\, gaining insight into archetypal and enduring design components. \nOften heard describing his approach as “blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor\,” he considers particular grade\, color and density of crushed stone on a garden path\, height and volume of water falling from a fountain\, the provenance of garden sculpture\, or the history and environmental suitability of specific plant varieties. For Smith\, the details are paramount. His portfolio includes diverse projects: plantations\, townhomes\, campuses\, golf courses\, new town developments\, and rooftop gardens. \nPart of Smith’s life mission is to share his knowledge and enthusiasm for design and beauty. His generosity of spirit has produced a significant body of accessible work for the public. To date\, he is the author of six bestselling books\, host and producer of one of PBS’s most successful and award-winning television shows\, he runs a media enterprise focused on garden design and health\, he is a speaker at many of the country’s important architectural and historic homes and opens his own home to the public each Spring and Fall. SUMMARY:Voices of Our Times: Nina Campbell Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! \nNina Campbell\nInterior Designer\, Fabric and Wallpaper Designer and Maker of Furniture and Home Accessories\nThursday\, April 11\, 2019\n11:15 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. \nMember Tickets: $100 | Non-member Tickets: $130\nTickets available to members on February 21 | Tickets available to non-members on March 14 \n \nAbbreviated Biography: \nNina Campbell is one of the world’s most respected and influential interior designers. Her design expertise is unparalleled and her client list reads like an international ’who’s who’. Renowned for her contagious wit and brilliant sense of personal style\, her interiors appeal to both young and old and work perfectly in both contemporary and traditional settings. \nNina started her design career at the age of 19 when she worked as an assistant to John Fowler at the prestigious Sybil Colefax & John Fowler Company. With her unmistakably rich and elegant color palette\, Nina’s work caught the eye of club owner Mark Birley\, who asked her to redecorate the famous Annabel’s private members’ club. This relationship was so successful that they combined forces once again in 1970 when they opened Campbell & Birley\, a shop in London specializing in ‘unashamed luxury’. It was here that Nina launched her signature ‘hearts’ design and this timeless motif is still available on a range of fine bone china. \nIn 1972\, Nina set up her own business\, Nina Campbell Ltd\, where one of her first commissions was to decorate Cullen House in Banffshire\, Scotland. There followed the opening of Nina’s shop and design studio on Walton Street in London’s Knightsbridge in 1984 where she continued her fabric printing as well as expanding her business into the wider decorative arena. In 1990\, Nina launched the first of what was to become her annual fabric\, wallpaper and trimming collections\, internationally distributed by Osborne & Little. \nThe interior design side of the business continued to flourish with notable projects including the Savoy Hotel lobby (with David Linley)\, the Hotel Parc Victor Hugo in Paris\, the Groucho Club in London\, the Campbell Apartment Bar at Grand Central Station\, New York\, the New Sheridan Hotel\, Telluride Colorado\, and the Ellenborough Park Hotel\, Cheltenham\, England. Nina also designed Outlaw’s Restaurant at the Capitol Hotel and parts of the Draycott Hotel\, both situated in central London. \nIn addition\, Nina has written six books on design -‘Elsie de Wolfe: A Decorative Life’ (1992)\, ‘The Art of Decoration’ (1996)\, ‘Nina Campbell’s Decorating Secrets’ (2000)\, ‘Nina Campbell’s Decorating Notebook’ (2004)\, ‘Elements of Design’ (2007) and Nina Campbell Interiors (October 2013). She is currently working on a new book due to be published in September 2017. \nHighlights from her long list of awards include an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Middlesex 2001\, the Royal Oak Timeless Design Award 2003 and Residential Designer of the Year 2010 from IDFX Magazine. Nina’s talent and design credentials are also recognized in America with the US Fashion Award for ‘the woman who has most influenced style internationally’\, the Brit Week Design Icon Award for her significant contributions to British design and the Legends Award celebrating distinguished individuals and corporations in the world of art and design from the Pratt Institute.
