DESCRIPTION:This event is a full capacity and is no longer accepting registrations. \nGirl Scout Art Museum Day \nPicture This: Imaginative Illustrations! \nSaturday\, January 20\, 2018 \nGirl Scouts can earn art badges by participating in hands-on activities on this fun day. Learn about the visual arts while earning a Badge or Patch—Daisy: Art Museum Visit Fun Patch; Brownie: Legacy –Artist – Painting Badge; Junior: Legacy – Artist – Drawing Badge; and Cadette: Art Museum Visit Fun Patch. \nEach two-hour session includes a docent-led tour and a themed art activity program. Inspired by Norman Rockwell’s iconic images\, Girl Scouts will illustrate their own scene for a magazine cover. They will learn about proportions to complete their drawing of a person. The surrounding scene will be illustrated and come to life with watercolor crayons and pencils.  We will tour the museum’s exhibitions\, Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera\, organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum\, Stockbridge\, Massachusetts and Secrets Behind the Wall: The Don Trachte Replicas\, organized by the National Museum of American Illustration\, Newport\, Rhode Island. Carns graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1959 as a member of its first class; from the Harvard Business School\, with Distinction\, in 1967; and from the Royal College of Defense Studies\, London\,  in 1977. He was a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force (USAF)\, serving four tours in Europe and four in the Pacific. He flew 200 combat missions in the F-4 Phantom II fighter in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War and was awarded the nation’s third highest combat decoration for valor\, the Silver Star. General Carns total flying time exceeds 6400 hours. \nWhile in the US Air Force\, General Carns served as Commander of the l3th Air Force\, Deputy Commander in Chief for the US Pacific Forces\, Director of the Joint Staff\, Joint Chiefs of Staff\, during the first Gulf War and the Panama Invasion\, and retired from the USAF after serving as Vice Chief of Staff in 1994. \nGeneral Carns has authored a number of articles and participated in numerous studies on current issues\, including such topics as the need to substantially alter the military acquisition process; undertaking a new energy strategy in the Department of Defense; the benefits of privatizing selective military logistics functions; the role of the military warfighter; the critical role of a credible US nuclear deterrent; applying energy efficiency standards to weapons system effectiveness\, and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Defense acquisition process. \nGeneral Carns and his wife\, Victoria\, have two children. Colonel Michelle C. Carns\, USAF\, is currently assigned to Doha\, Qatar; Major Marc G. Carns\, USAF\, JA\, is currently assigned to 24th US Air Force\, San Antonio\, Texas. The Carns’s reside in Pebble Beach\, California.

DESCRIPTION:Artsy Tots will introduce toddlers between the ages of 2 and 3 to art and to the museum through artful short stories\, gallery play activities\, and an art activity. The program helps with color recognition\, fine motor skills\, hand-eye coordination and more! \nArtsy Tots classes are held on one Friday a month from 11:00-11:45 a.m. Class size is limited to 12 children and registration is required. Area school systems have been notified regarding this teacher professional development workshop. \nABOUT STACEY HOLLOWAY: \nStacey Holloway is an active national installation-based artist and sculptor that focuses on the transformation and growth on individuals as they mature. Through the exploration of storytelling and ethology\, she constructs sculptural stills that represent anxieties and fears that collide with a world of ambiguous sub-consciousness. Her work takes the viewer on a journey to discover the idea of “home.” \nStacey received her MFA from the University of Minnesota in 2009\, her BFA from Herron School of Art and Design/IUPUI in 2006\, and\, recently\, became the Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2013. From 2009 to 2013\, Holloway was employed by Herron School of Art and Design as their Sculpture Technician and Instructor of Sculpture\, 3D Design\, and Sculpture Foundry Methods. \nHolloway has exhibited throughout the Midwest\, South and East Coast in galleries such as Wayfarers\, Brooklyn\, NY; FM Gallery\, Chicago\, IL; Gallery 924 at the Arts Council of Indianapolis\, IN;\nHuntsville Museum of Art\, AL; and the South Bend Museum of Art in Indiana. Holloway has received distinguished awards such as the 2010 Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship through the Efroymson Family Fund: Central Indiana Community Foundation in Indianapolis\, the Juror’s Choice Award at The Red Clay Survey: 2014 Exhibition of Contemporary Southern Art at the Huntsville Museum of Art and the 2017 SECAC Artist’s Fellowship. For more information\, visit staceyholloway.com. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP: \nThe workshop is presented in conjunction with the Visual Arts Achievement Program (March 11)\, Congressional Art Competition and Youth Art Month (March 11 – April 29) exhibitions. \nEchoing Nature: Relief and Texture Plaster Tiles Teacher Professional Development Workshop will assist teachers in aiding students to develop critical thinking skills and in the understanding of the creative process. Holloway will introduce ways of working with relief sculptural techniques. Teachers will learn ways to enhance their visual arts classroom curricula. Each participant will complete a finished work of art. The workshop will explore the role of traditional relief mosaics and the narrative aspects of the natural world. Teachers will use the production of multiple low relief plaster tiles to create a larger mosaic in a collaborative group setting. John Zierdt graduated from West Point in 1966 and his family lineage reflects a long history of successful West Point graduates. He began his career as a project manager working in High Energy Laser and National Missile Defense programs and later specialized in logistical support during a 30 year Army career\, which included management positions in the Pentagon. He also served as Vice President of Huntsville Operations for Orbital Sciences Corporation for 10 years. \nDavid Reel is a nationally recognized expert in the Museum field with a particular emphasis on the fine Arts and a specialty in american nineteenth century landscape painting and military portraiture. In his twenty-five years of museum experience\, he has worked with private collectors\, auction houses\, corporate curators and numerous museums to assemble outstanding exhibitions and collections. \n

SUMMARY:Artist Gallery Walk: "Encounters: Jim Jobe"
DESCRIPTION:The latest exhibition in this long-standing showcase for outstanding regional contemporary art focuses on the accomplished works of the respected Huntsville artist\, Jim Jobe. Jobe’s paintings and drawings incorporate both pure abstraction and an eccentric combination of abstract and representational elements. Much of his imagery suggests both direct and peripheral perception. An avid hiker\, the artist describes this phenomenon in his work: “When you’re hiking\, you can stop and frame a bucolic setting\, but that’s not how you experience it. In reality\, imagery comes in constantly from all sorts of directions. It’s how I see things. Everywhere\, I see these puzzle-pieces of interwoven connections.” \nBorn in Buffalo\, New York\, Jobe spent his youth in a military family traveling throughout the United States and abroad\, finally moving from Athens\, Greece and settling in the Southeast. He earned a B.S. in art education from Freed-Hardiman College in Henderson\, TN\, as well as B.F.A. and M.F.A. in fine art from the University of Alabama\, and has worked as an artist\, art educator\, and strong advocate for arts education. \nPrimarily recognized as a painter\, Jobe works in several disciplines and mediums. For a few years\, in an effort to refocus his work\, the artist stopped painting altogether and tried to re-teach himself how to draw. Admiration for the craftsmanship of woodworkers and ceramicists led him to approach drawing more as a way of achieving mastery with a pencil as a tool than as a way to produce imagery.
