Visit the Museum’s newest exhibit all day from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. \nThe Red Clay Survey is a major recurring regional competition sponsored by the Huntsville Museum of Art that “takes the pulse” of contemporary Southern art through a selection of work in all styles and media determined by jurors with strong curatorial credentials. The exhibition recognizes and encourages excellence\, and provides a permanent record of the development of regional art through the publication of a comprehensive exhibition catalog. Selected works will be displayed in 5 galleries in the Museum’s elegant facility\, located in Big Spring International Park in Downtown Huntsville. \nThis recurring juried competition\, presented every three years\, presents over 100 outstanding works by artists from 11 Southern states representing a cross-section of the best in regional contemporary art in varied media.

SUMMARY:OPENING - Hard Earned: The Military Photographs by Stacy Pearsall and the Veteran’s Portrait Project
DESCRIPTION:Robin Robinson\, ArmyE-5 Logistics and Procurement 1977-1991\, Gulf War\, Multi National Forces EgyptVeterans Portrait Project\, Louisville\, KYVFW Convention(Photos by Stacy L. Pearsall) \nStacy Pearsall got her start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During three combat tours\, she earned the Bronze Star Medal and Air Force Commendation with Valor. She is one of only two women to win the National Press Photographer’s Association Military Photographer of the Year competition\, and the only woman to have won it twice. Though combat disabled and retired from military service\, Pearsall has not let her disabilities hold her back. With her service animal Charlie by her side\, she continues to work worldwide as an independent photographer and is an author\, educator\, military consultant\, public speaker and founder of the Veteran’s Portrait Project. This exhibition presents 45 works highlighting Pearsall’s combat photography as well as selections from her award-winning series\, The Veteran’s Portrait Project. Explore the art of nuno felting during a day of hands-on creation and discovery. Participants will learn the fundamentals in fabric and fiber selection\, technique\, and design layout while making their own “Mosaic” wet felted scarf with the same carefully sourced fibers and fabrics Kami uses in her designs. Dress for comfort\, there will be long periods of standing\, as well as some physical exertion during the layout and felting process. Students are asked to bring 2 old towels and they may wish to bring a special or favorite button to use for their scarf. Materials provided. Space is limited to 6 participants.

Enjoy a live on-screen lecture by Stacy Pearsall for only $25. Learn more about Pearsall’s background as an Air Force photographer and gain a deeper understanding of the moving exhibition\, Hard Earned: The Military Photographs by Stacy Pearsall and the Veterans Portrait Project. Seating is limited to 75. Masks are required\, and social distancing will be enforced. Masks can be removed to enjoy a glass of wine\, and social distancing will be maintained in the gallery. Doors open at 5:30. The lecture will begin in the Great Hall at 6 p.m. \nStacy Pearsall got her start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During three combat tours\, she earned the Bronze Star Medal and Air Force Commendation with Valor. She is one of only two women to win the National Press Photographer’s Association Military Photographer of the Year competition\, and the only woman to have won it twice. Though combat disabled and retired from military service\, Pearsall has not let her disabilities hold her back. With her service animal Charlie by her side\, she continues to work worldwide as an independent photographer and is an author\, educator\, military consultant\, public speaker and founder of the Veterans Portrait Project. This exhibition presents 35 works highlighting Pearsall’s combat photography as well as selections from her award-winning series\, The Veterans Portrait Project.
