SUMMARY:$5 After 5 with Josh Taylor
DESCRIPTION:$5 After 5 with Josh Taylor\nThursdays | 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.\nMembers: Free | Non-Members: $5\nEnjoy $5 admission on Thursdays from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Huntsville Museum of Art. Explore the Museum’s latest exhibitions or visit favorites from the Museum collection during this after-hours event. Wine service has returned. Guests aged 21+ will be able to purchase a glass of wine from the Church Street Wine Shoppe for $7. Tonight’s menu features Space Age Rosé and Odessa Red Blend wines. He is an award-winning fingerstyle guitarist and took home the state champion title during the 2019 Athens Old Time Fiddler’s Convention Fingerstyle Guitar Competition and was the runner-up in 2021 with plans to reclaim his title in 2022. Josh is heavily influenced by the work of guitarists such as Tommy Emmanuel\, Jerry Reed\, Chet Atkins\, and Joe Robinson and his time spent studying these artists has yielded a sound that is reminiscent of his heroes while still providing his own modern twist. Josh is a member of the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society and through his time with them has played with and for some of the best guitarists in the world including the aforementioned Tommy Emmanuel. Taylor’s sound covers a wide range of genres and he is able to go from country to jazz to pop to classical and even to rock n’ roll seamlessly (and somehow being able to do it all on one acoustic guitar!). He is also an educator and teaches privately at Colors Fine Arts Center in Huntsville Alabama.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: Betty Grisham: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nBetty Grisham: A Celebration\nSunday\, July 3 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, Betty Grisham: A Celebration. \nThe Museum is pleased to have this opportunity to present a memorial exhibition of artworks by beloved Huntsville artist and arts advocate Betty Grisham\, who passed away last year at the venerable age of 99. A North Alabama native\, she earned her BA in Fine Art and Education at Montevallo College in 1942\, and MA in Fine Art Education from Columbia University Teachers College in 1945. After teaching and exhibiting in Atlanta and Birmingham\, she settled in Huntsville in 1963\, where she continued to experiment with textiles and the applied arts including needlepoint\, rug making and fabric design. Her unique garments for the commercial market were sold in New York and elsewhere\, and she founded a business designing custom hand painted and printed fabrics for interior design. Grisham also became an important advocate of the Huntsville Art League\, as well as a key supporter and patron of the Huntsville Museum of Art. She retired in the mid 1990s and continued to work from her home studio on paintings\, wall hangings and needlepoints for many years. \nGrisham’s art was often inspired by the colors and shapes of nature\, interpreted through her lively imagination and confident use of abstraction. She easily moved between bold drama and poetic restraint in her works\, and the Museum’s collection of 24 paintings\, textiles\, prints and collages exemplify her broad skill set. Her artworks are uniquely personal\, combining traditional handwork like embroidery and fabric dying with abstracted\, bold patterning. Reflecting upon what inspired her creativity\, the artist once said: “Winter’s fiery sunsets\, I see and enjoy them every day. Then I do drawings that become other works. Things that are growing — nature\, I come back to it more and more. Changes of the seasons and the subtlety of nature inspire my work. I have studied art history and see great value in all periods. Georgia O’Keeffe was an influence. Inspiration comes from many sources.”

SUMMARY:CLOSING DAY: Beauty\, Passion & Bliss
DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nBeauty\, Passion & Bliss:\n19th Century Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art\nSunday\, July 3 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last look at Beauty\, Passion & Bliss: 19th Century Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art. Drawn from the rich collections of the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York City\, Beauty\, Passion & Bliss features an outstanding selection of paintings and sculptures that embody the 19th-century European academic tradition. Originating in 16th-century Italy\, this tradition was based on learning to draw the human figure\, and in adhering to principals of ideal beauty epitomized by Classical and Renaissance art. \nThe exhibition features a surprisingly wide range of themes and styles. There are historical\, religious\, and mythological paintings\, considered the highest form of art\, as well as examples of the ways in which historical themes were transformed into intimate\, detailed genre scenes that\, along with landscapes and idealized rustic subjects\, appealed to wealthy and middle-class European and American collectors. Also well-represented is Orientalism — highly popular images of the Middle East and North Africa that freely commingled reality and fantasy. Organized by the Dahesh Museum of Art\, New York\, NY.
