SUMMARY:$5 after 5 - Josh Taylor\, Guitar/ Rocket City HEMA
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays | 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.\nMembers: Free | Non-Members: $5\nEnjoy $5 admission on Thursdays from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Huntsville Museum of Art. Explore the Museum’s latest exhibitions or visit favorites from the Museum collection during this after-hours event. Wine service has returned. Guests aged 21+ will be able to purchase a glass of wine from the Church Street Wine Shoppe for $7. \nRocket City HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) will be demonstrating the modern use of armor in the historical manner. Showing how armor is worn\, how different periods of armor impact its function\, as well as allowing a hands-on feeling that you cannot get with the originals. They will also be showcasing the use of our weapons against our armor and the different forms of “combat” that we recreate in modern day. \n \nJosh Taylor: Guitarist\, composer\, and singer who cut his teeth in Nashville\, Tennessee before moving back to his hometown of Madison\, Alabama. He is an award-winning fingerstyle guitarist and took home the state champion title during the 2019 Athens Old Time Fiddler’s Convention Fingerstyle Guitar Competition and was the runner-up in 2021 with plans to reclaim his title in 2022. Josh is heavily influenced by the work of guitarists such as Tommy Emmanuel\, Jerry Reed\, Chet Atkins\, and Joe Robinson and his time spent studying these artists has yielded a sound that is reminiscent of his heroes while still providing his own modern twist. Josh is a member of the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society and through his time with them has played with and for some of the best guitarists in the world including the aforementioned Tommy Emmanuel. Taylor’s sound covers a wide range of genres and he is able to go from country to jazz to pop to classical and even to rock n’ roll seamlessly (and somehow being able to do it all on one acoustic guitar!). He is also an educator and teaches privately at Colors Fine Arts Center in Huntsville Alabama.

SUMMARY:CLOSING DAY: The Age of Armor: Treasures from the Higgins Armory Collection at the Worcester Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nThe Age of Armor: Treasures from the Higgins Armory Collection at the Worcester Art Museum\nSunday\, January 14 | 12 – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view The Age of Armor: Treasures from the Higgins Armory Collection at the Worcester Art Museum. From the warriors of ancient Greek legends\, to the knights of the Middle Ages\, to the superheroes of today’s popular culture\, the idea of personal body armor has an enduring hold on the human imagination. Armor is as old as human civilization\, and has been used in various forms in societies around the globe\, but full suits of articulated steel plates were made only in Europe\, and only for a brief time in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. This exhibition explores the story of armor in its golden age. \nSuits of armor are among the most popular objects with museumgoers\, but there are few significant collections of armor in the Americas. In 2014\, the Worcester Art Museum acquired the Higgins Armory Collection. While most of this rare collection is in storage awaiting the creation of a dedicated arms and armor gallery\, there is a unique opportunity to share these objects with a national and international public. Visitors will discover the diverse and often surprising stories embedded in these powerful objects. Far from the ungainly exoskeleton we often imagine today\, the suit of armor was made to be sleek and stylish—painstakingly engineered\, elegantly designed\, and treasured as the expression of its owner’s taste\, sophistication\, and prowess. \nThis exhibition was organized by the Worcester Art Museum.

SUMMARY:CLOSING DAY: Rania Matar: SHE
DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nRania Matar: SHE\nSunday\, February 11 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view Rania Matar: SHE. SHE features 50 large-scale color images of contemporary girls transitioning into womanhood by Lebanese-American photographer Rania Matar. Born and raised in Lebanon\, Matar moved to the United States in 1984. She has dedicated her work to exploring issues of personal and collective identity\, through photographs of female adolescence and adulthood. Matar works both in the United States and the Middle East\, in an effort to focus on notions of identity and individuality within the context of the underlying universality of these experiences. \nThis exhibition focuses on young women in their 20s—the ages of Matar’s own daughters—as they leave the cocoon of home and enter adulthood. In earlier projects\, Matar photographed young women in relation to the controlled environment of their bedrooms. Here\, she captures them in the larger arena they find themselves in after leaving home—the global and complicated backdrop that now constitutes their lives in transition. Organized by The Museum Box LLC\, Boston\, MA.
