SUMMARY:Teacher Professional Development Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Echoing Nature: Relief and Texture Plaster Tiles with Stacey Holloway \nFriday\, February 23\, 2018\n8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nWorkshop held in HMA Academy Classrooms \nNo fee. Space is limited. Register early! \nTo register\, please email the following information to Amy Thomas\, Museum Academy Assistant at athomas@hsvmuseum.org. \n\nTeacher Name\nName of School\nContact Phone Number\n\nA workshop confirmation letter will be sent to you via email upon receipt of your registration. Lunch will be on your own! Area school systems have been notified regarding this teacher professional development workshop. \nABOUT STACEY HOLLOWAY: \nStacey Holloway is an active national installation-based artist and sculptor that focuses on the transformation and growth on individuals as they mature. Through the exploration of storytelling and ethology\, she constructs sculptural stills that represent anxieties and fears that collide with a world of ambiguous sub-consciousness. Her work takes the viewer on a journey to discover the idea of “home.” \nStacey received her MFA from the University of Minnesota in 2009\, her BFA from Herron School of Art and Design/IUPUI in 2006\, and\, recently\, became the Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2013. From 2009 to 2013\, Holloway was employed by Herron School of Art and Design as their Sculpture Technician and Instructor of Sculpture\, 3D Design\, and Sculpture Foundry Methods. \nHolloway has exhibited throughout the Midwest\, South and East Coast in galleries such as Wayfarers\, Brooklyn\, NY; FM Gallery\, Chicago\, IL; Gallery 924 at the Arts Council of Indianapolis\, IN;\nHuntsville Museum of Art\, AL; and the South Bend Museum of Art in Indiana. Holloway has received distinguished awards such as the 2010 Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship through the Efroymson Family Fund: Central Indiana Community Foundation in Indianapolis\, the Juror’s Choice Award at The Red Clay Survey: 2014 Exhibition of Contemporary Southern Art at the Huntsville Museum of Art and the 2017 SECAC Artist’s Fellowship. For more information\, visit staceyholloway.com. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP: \nThe workshop is presented in conjunction with the Visual Arts Achievement Program (March 11)\, Congressional Art Competition and Youth Art Month (March 11 – April 29) exhibitions. \nEchoing Nature: Relief and Texture Plaster Tiles Teacher Professional Development Workshop will assist teachers in aiding students to develop critical thinking skills and in the understanding of the creative process. Holloway will introduce ways of working with relief sculptural techniques. Teachers will learn ways to enhance their visual arts classroom curricula. Each participant will complete a finished work of art. The workshop will explore the role of traditional relief mosaics and the narrative aspects of the natural world. Teachers will use the production of multiple low relief plaster tiles to create a larger mosaic in a collaborative group setting. Through the investigation of reductive/additive carving and push mold techniques\, teachers will learn how surface and texture can illustrate a larger composition. \nSponsored by Huntsville Museum of Art\, The Alabama State Council on the Arts\, Alabama Arts Alliance and Huntsville-Madison County Art Education Association.

SUMMARY:Artist Gallery Walk: "Encounters: Jim Jobe"
DESCRIPTION:The latest exhibition in this long-standing showcase for outstanding regional contemporary art focuses on the accomplished works of the respected Huntsville artist\, Jim Jobe. Jobe’s paintings and drawings incorporate both pure abstraction and an eccentric combination of abstract and representational elements. Much of his imagery suggests both direct and peripheral perception. An avid hiker\, the artist describes this phenomenon in his work: “When you’re hiking\, you can stop and frame a bucolic setting\, but that’s not how you experience it. In reality\, imagery comes in constantly from all sorts of directions. It’s how I see things. Everywhere\, I see these puzzle-pieces of interwoven connections.” \nBorn in Buffalo\, New York\, Jobe spent his youth in a military family traveling throughout the United States and abroad\, finally moving from Athens\, Greece and settling in the Southeast. He earned a B.S. in art education from Freed-Hardiman College in Henderson\, TN\, as well as B.F.A. and M.F.A. in fine art from the University of Alabama\, and has worked as an artist\, art educator\, and strong advocate for arts education. \nPrimarily recognized as a painter\, Jobe works in several disciplines and mediums. For a few years\, in an effort to refocus his work\, the artist stopped painting altogether and tried to re-teach himself how to draw. Admiration for the craftsmanship of woodworkers and ceramicists led him to approach drawing more as a way of achieving mastery with a pencil as a tool than as a way to produce imagery. This led him more deeply into abstraction\, studying the interplay between line and shape and color. \nArtist Gallery Walk & Reception\n2 p.m.\, Sunday\, April 8\nGrisham Gallery\nReception following in the Richard and Roper Room – Hosted by the Huntsville Museum of Art Guild.

Which may be why this Mississippi native is the best thing to happen to Southern art in decades.” -Julia Reed\n[Read full article here] \nWilliam (Bill) Dunlap has distinguished himself as an artist\, arts commentator and educator\, during a career that has spanned more than three decades. Dunlap has an M.F.A. from the University of Mississippi\, and taught at Appalachian State University in North Carolina (1970-79) and Memphis State University (1979-80).  He currently maintains studios in McLean\, Virginia; Mathiston\, Mississippi and Coral Gables\, Florida.  His paintings\, sculpture\, and constructions are included in prestigious collections\, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Corcoran Gallery of Art.  For more information about William Dunlap\, visit http://www.williamdunlap.com. \nDunlap will be signing his recent bestseller\, Short Mean Fiction.  “Like tales from the Old Testament\, these stories are mean\, rampant with sex\, violence\, and death.” William Dunlap’s debut collection of stories\, words\, and pictures makes a strong case for Hypothetical Realism in his art. The artist will speak about his role to “create something out of nothing” and read excerpts from his book. \nThank you to our Sponsors! \nMedia Sponsor

SUMMARY:Master Artist Workshop: David Dunlop
DESCRIPTION:THIS CLASS IS SOLD OUT!\n[CLICK HERE TO VIEW UPCOMING MASTER ARTIST WORKSHOPS]\nLearn from a Master! Don’t miss the unique opportunity to receive one-on-one instruction from a nationally-recognized Master Artist! For more information about individual instructors\, please visit their websites. \nMaster Artist Workshops are held in the Museum Academy classrooms located downstairs in the Museum. Enter on the North Patio – pond side at Big Spring Park.\nIf you are interested in a Master Artist Workshop that is SOLD OUT\, please email your name and phone number to Laura E. Smith\, Director of Education/Museum Academy at lsmith@hsvmuseum.org to be added to the wait list. Members registration fee refers to Huntsville Museum of Art members. \nABOUT THE CLASS: May 3-6\, 2018 | 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. \nEach day begins with demonstrations and followed by your instructor working individually with each artist. These personal instructor visits allow each artist to expand their skills and enjoyably realize their own ambitions in a relaxed\, friendly\, and comfortable way. Media include acrylic\, oil and watercolor. Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. \nThe following subjects will be covered: Day 1. Water. We learn to paint illusions of translucent water\, (lakes\, streams\, vernal pools) with reflections that shimmer and quiver. Your instructor will demonstrate aspects of painting water in oil\, watercolor and acrylic and mixed media. Learn how past masters like John Singer Sargent\, Winslow Homer and J.M.W. Turner painted water with drama and movement. Day 2. Luminous and Intimate Nature. We learn to paint close-up views of nature from novel points of view\, as if we were imbedded in a meadow or a garden. We learn to paint the feeling of infinite complexity of flora and the textures and patterns of closely observed nature. Artist’s techniques from Corot to Wyeth will be demonstrated here. Day 3. Perspective with Expression. Today\, get comfortable with varieties of perspective from linear perspective\, color perspective\, atmospheric perspective\, and the perspectives of disappearance\, smoothing\, and rounding\, among others. We consider how artists evoked the excitement of cities from Turner’s paintings of Venice to Monet’s Paris to contemporary artists’ visions of cities. Day 4. From Representation to Abstraction. Learn how to make your landscape subjects evocative and suggestive. We begin with the blurred\, dream-like landscape evocations of Inness\, Turner\, and the vaporous distillations of Whistler. We see how artists like Cezanne combined the biology of vision with historical landscape painting.

SUMMARY:Alan Shuptrine: The Serpentine Chain OPENS
DESCRIPTION:On Display Now – August 5\, 2018 \nThis exhibition of thematic watercolor paintings by Tennessee artist Alan Shuptrine pays tribute to the land and people found along the Appalachian Trail\, and of the distinctive culture that endures from the mountains of Maine to Georgia. The body of work celebrates the connections of Appalachia with its historical and cultural counterpart in the British Isles\, highlighting Celtic traditions that were brought to America in the 18th century and are still practiced in the region today. The paintings are ornamented with Shuptrine’s hand-carved frames\, many of which are embedded with serpentine\, a mineral that is found not only along the entire Appalachian Trail\, but also in the regions of the British Isles where the original settlers to Appalachia were born. Organized by Alan Shuptrine and the Huntsville Museum of Art.
