SUMMARY:CLOSING DAY: Dorothea Lange’s America
DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nDorothea Lange’s America\nSunday\, August 7 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view Dorothea Lange’s America. \nThe Great Depression was a catalyst for a tremendous outburst of creative energy from America’s photographic community. The devastation wrought upon the country by the Depression inspired a host of socially conscious photographers to capture the many human stories of the time. Dorothea Lange’s America presents these stories with 30 photographs by Dorothea Lange as well as 25 additional works by 11 other photographers working during those troubled times\, including Walker Evans\, Ben Shawn\, Doris Ulmann and Marion Post Wolcott. Each used their cameras and the power of photography to effect positive change. \nPre-eminent among these photographers was Dorothea Lange (1895-1965). Her empathetic images documented the toll that the Depression took on the nation. The evidence was seen in the long lines of desperate\, jobless men\, migrant workers searching for work\, and impoverished families living in squalid conditions. Lange’s photographs made the human cost of the Depression personal by searing these images into America’s consciousness. Her most celebrated photographs of that era – Migrant Mother\, White Angel Breadline and Migratory Cotton Picker – have since become icons of the American experience. Organized by Art2Art Circulating Exhibitions\, Ann Arbor\, MI.

SUMMARY:OPENING DAY: A World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:Opening Day\nA World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection\nSaturday\, August 20 | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.\nView the Museum’s newest exhibition\, A World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection. \nUtilizing works found within the Museum’s acclaimed permanent collection\, A World Within presents a diverse array of art by women that explores a range of media and subject matter with broad variation in style and method. \nTraditionally accepted feminine art practices are being embraced\, ignored\, or transformed\, as each artist sees fit\, across the spectrum of women’s art. Accordingly\, this exhibition examines some of the ways that female artists evolve their chosen mediums\, contemplate the world\, and represent themselves and other women. Throughout the exhibition there is a subtle duality at play\, encompassing both what is portrayed and the imagined world of the artist’s creation. The viewer is thus invited to consider the works on display in a complex way\, and to make unexpected connections throughout the galleries.

SUMMARY:Master Artist Workshop with Donna Bland
DESCRIPTION:Creating Beautiful Landscapes in Acrylic or Oil\nSkill Level: All \nThursday\, September 15 – Sunday\, September 18\, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nMembers: $550 | Non-Members: $600 \nRegister for workshop here! \n\nDonna Bland\, Hills of Tuscany\, 2021\, oil on canvas \nCompleting a painting each day. Learn to perceive and simplify shape and color while creating a painting. Visually interpret relationship of shape\, value and color. Donna Bland will start a demo painting\, then begin a step-by-step process to completing a painting each day. Individual help at each easel. Each artist will be able to complete exercises in color mixing which will help to learn mixing and find the correct color. \nBland lives and paints in the Austin\, Texas area. Painting daily in her studio\, plein air or teaching a workshop\, subjects are unlimited. She loves to learn\, create and share what she has experienced in finishing a painting. No words to describe the joy in painting outdoors in the Texas Hill Country\, Colorado or Mexico. She is a member of Oil Painters of America\, the American Impressionist Society\, the Austin Plein Air Painters\, American Women Artists and Artists of Texas. She has received numerous awards and has paintings in corporate and private collections. When she first started painting in Georgia\, Bland was taught to paint scenes that interested her. Painting what interests her adds a feeling of excitement into her painterly strokes. Painting outdoors (en plein air) is a wonderful way to study light and shadow as the day unfolds. Bland – “Painting a portrait is especially fun because I get to know the people or create a scene from a person’s life. From outdoor scenes\, to portraits\, to still life – I love it all.” Each canvas is the opportunity to create a new design made of various colors and shapes. She formally studied art at The Student Art League of New York\, Scottsdale School of Art\, University of Georgia and Tyler Junior College in Texas. And\, has been fortunate to paint with modern day masters throughout the United States as well as Europe. Continuing to study and read works by John Singer Sargent\, Nicolai Fechin\, Richard Schmid\, Joaquin Sorolla and Emile Gruppé lends it’s influence in her work.
