SUMMARY:Docent-led Public Tour of The Sporting Life: Selections from the Remington Arms Art Collection
DESCRIPTION:Highlight Tour\nSunday\, October 29\n2 p.m.\, Meet in the Main Lobby\nFree to Museum members/ Included in general admission for non-members \nBoasting over 400 paintings dating from roughly 100 years ago to the present\, Remington’s holdings include works by such respected early 20th century artists as N.C. Wyeth\, Frank Xavier Leyendecker\, Lynn Bogue Hunt and William Harnden Foster\, as well as paintings by contemporary masters Tom Beecham\, Larry Duke and the legendary Bob Kuhn (the man generally acknowledged to be the greatest animal painter of the last half-century). \nThe paintings were commissioned to illustrate posters\, prints\, calendars and other advertising vehicles for The Remington Arms Company\, America’s oldest gun maker. Founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington in Ilion\, New York\, as E. Remington and Sons\, it remains the largest American producer of shotguns and rifles. The paintings that were created for the company over the past century typically depicted a sportsman using a Remington firearm or ammunition\, but often in an understated way. The underlying idea was that the image through the drama\, excitement and romantic appeal of its narrative\, would excite the imaginations of sportsmen and hunters alike. \nThe superiority of Remington’s products was implied\, with the subtext being that using Remington would make you a better shot and\, in effect\, a better hunter. The more effective an artist was at creating images that triggered these emotional responses\, the more successfully the message was conveyed. \nOrganized by the Huntsville Museum of Art\, The Sporting Life includes approximately 75 original works and is the first major museum exhibition curated from the Remington Arms Collection in over 40 years.

SUMMARY:Painting a Nation: Hudson River School Landscapes Lecture & Reception
DESCRIPTION:Members’ Lecture & Reception\nThursday\, October 19\, 2017\nLecture: 6:00-6:45 p.m.\, Great Hall (Doors open at 5:30 p.m.)\nLecture will be given by Dr. David Stewart of UAH who will be discussing the Hudson River School and the American Dream.\nReception 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.\, Gallery Level (Hosted by the Museum Guild)\nReception will include wine and hors d’oeuvres.\nFree to Museum members/ Included with general admission for non-members \nOnline registration is closed.  Call 256.535.4350 ext. 208 for ticket availability. \nNatives of New York\, Ann and Lee Higdon developed an interest in art during their teenage years. They often visited museums and found themselves drawn to paintings of the Hudson River School. After marrying and purchasing a nineteenth-century home overlooking the Hudson\, they began to collect paintings of the Hudson River School in the 1980s. For nearly forty years\, their interest in this artistic period has endured\, resulting in the collection of works on view in this exhibition. \nIn the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries\, American artists looked to Europe for both aesthetic themes and painterly methods of depicting the world around them. This began to change in the early decades of the nineteenth century as artists adapted European aesthetics to develop a distinctly American landscape narrative.  The name Hudson River School\, originally intended to be disparaging\, was coined to identify a group of landscape artists living in New York City\, several of whom built homes on the Hudson River. The term has evolved beyond regional expression and is now generally accepted to describe nineteenth-century American landscape painting. \nPainting a Nation: Hudson River School Landscapes from the Higdon Collection features significant American artists from the Hudson River School\, including Albert Bierstadt\, William Bradford\, Jasper Francis Cropsey\, William Hart\, William Trost Richards and many others. The majority of the works depict scenes of New York State and include paintings of the Hudson River\, Lake George and the Adirondack Mountains region.  However\, the second generation of Hudson River School painters extended their visual reach into areas along the Atlantic Coast and Far West\, reflecting the expansion of the United States during the mid-nineteenth century.  Together\, these paintings celebrate the picturesque beauty of our nation and reflect the collective desire of the Hudson River painters to develop a uniquely American visual language\, independent of European schools of painting. \nAssembled with a discerning eye for quality\, the Higdon Collection includes superb examples of Hudson River School paintings\, the first native school of painting in the United States. \n

SUMMARY:Master Artist Workshop with Brian Bomeisler
DESCRIPTION:Pre-registration required. \nWorkshops are held in the Museum Academy classrooms located downstairs in the Museum. Enter on the North Patio – pond side at Big Spring International Park. Look for the Museum Academy entrance!  \n2017 Master Artist Workshop\nBrian Bomeisler\nDrawing on the Right Side of the Brain\nFive – Day Intensive Drawing Class\nMonday – Friday\, October 2 – 6\, 2017\n9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. \nRegistration Extended Until September 22nd! \nBack by popular demand! This intensive class is designed for individuals with little or no prior drawing training and perhaps believe that learning to draw well is only possible for those lucky people with “inborn talent”. However\, it has been proven that the global skill of drawing any perceived object\, person or place requires five basic component perceptual skills. These skills are the perception of edges\, spaces\, relationships\, lights and shadows\, and the whole or gestalt. Global or whole skills\, such as reading\, driving and drawing\, in time become automatic with the integration of the component skills. Instruction by Brian Bomeisler\, Dr. Betty Edwards’ son. Each day begins with a lecture on one of the five skills required. After lectures\, students participate in drawing exercises\, with Brian’s instruction\, through the day. The day will end with a critique of the day’s session. Skill Level: All. Workshop fee is $1\,600 for Museum members or non-members. \n \nPhoto of Workshop Students \n\nBrian Bomeisler received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute Brooklyn\, New York in 1975\, and has been a working and showing artist since then.  He lives and works in Soho\, New York City.  In 1985\, he received a Fellowship from the NEA and has paintings in collections at The Museum of Contemporary Art\, La Jolla\, The Hyde Collection\, New York and corporate and private collections around the world.  Bomeisler taught alongside his mother\, Betty Edwards\, from 1988 until her retirement in 1998.  Since then he has been leading the Drawing and Painting Workshops worldwide.  He has also been an instructor at the New York Academy of Art for a number of years. His illustrations appear alongside the text in The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. \nClick Here to Register!

DESCRIPTION:Workshops are held in the Museum Academy classrooms located downstairs in the Museum. Enter on the North Patio – pond side at Big Spring International Park. Look for the Museum Academy entrance!  \n2017 Master Artist Workshop\nGary Chapman\nCHARCOAL: Expressive Mark-Making\, A Painter’s Approach to Drawing\nFriday & Saturday\, September 15 & 16\, 2017\n9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\n \nRegistration Extended Until September 13! \n\n \nGary Chapman\, Landscape\, charcoal © 2016 \n\nStudents will explore charcoal as the perfect drawing medium for expressive mark-making. Students will develop a personal approach to loose\, aggressive mark-making with a combination of additive and subtractive techniques using charcoal and erasers for mark making and developing grounds. While charcoal will be the primary medium\, eventually students will be encouraged to combine other media such as conté crayon and spray paint. The class will focus upon mark making as it relates to abstraction and later students may opt to explore the different ways these same techniques can be applied to observational drawing for a provocative and beautiful fusion of abstraction and realism. All levels are welcome. Workshop fee is $225 members/$250 non-members. \nGary Chapman is a Professor of Art – Drawing and Painting at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and has had over 60 solo exhibitions with institutions such as The Arts Center of St. Petersburg\, Florida and the Indianapolis Art Center. He has participated in national and international exhibitions\, and his paintings have been purchased for numerous museums\, corporate and private collections.
