DESCRIPTION:Artsy Tots will introduce toddlers between the ages of 2 and 3 to art and to the museum through artful short stories\, gallery play activities\, and an art activity. John Zierdt graduated from West Point in 1966 and his family lineage reflects a long history of successful West Point graduates. He began his career as a project manager working in High Energy Laser and National Missile Defense programs and later specialized in logistical support during a 30 year Army career\, which included management positions in the Pentagon. He also served as Vice President of Huntsville Operations for Orbital Sciences Corporation for 10 years. \nDavid Reel is a nationally recognized expert in the Museum field with a particular emphasis on the fine Arts and a specialty in american nineteenth century landscape painting and military portraiture. In his twenty-five years of museum experience\, he has worked with private collectors\, auction houses\, corporate curators and numerous museums to assemble outstanding exhibitions and collections. \n

SUMMARY:Artist Gallery Walk: "Encounters: Jim Jobe"
DESCRIPTION:The latest exhibition in this long-standing showcase for outstanding regional contemporary art focuses on the accomplished works of the respected Huntsville artist\, Jim Jobe. Jobe’s paintings and drawings incorporate both pure abstraction and an eccentric combination of abstract and representational elements. Much of his imagery suggests both direct and peripheral perception. An avid hiker\, the artist describes this phenomenon in his work: “When you’re hiking\, you can stop and frame a bucolic setting\, but that’s not how you experience it. In reality\, imagery comes in constantly from all sorts of directions. It’s how I see things. Everywhere\, I see these puzzle-pieces of interwoven connections.” \nBorn in Buffalo\, New York\, Jobe spent his youth in a military family traveling throughout the United States and abroad\, finally moving from Athens\, Greece and settling in the Southeast. He earned a B.S. in art education from Freed-Hardiman College in Henderson\, TN\, as well as B.F.A. and M.F.A. in fine art from the University of Alabama\, and has worked as an artist\, art educator\, and strong advocate for arts education. \nPrimarily recognized as a painter\, Jobe works in several disciplines and mediums. For a few years\, in an effort to refocus his work\, the artist stopped painting altogether and tried to re-teach himself how to draw. Admiration for the craftsmanship of woodworkers and ceramicists led him to approach drawing more as a way of achieving mastery with a pencil as a tool than as a way to produce imagery. Following the concert\, visit the gallery level and preview the new exhibition (general admission will apply). \nAbout the Valley Conservatory: \nThe Valley Conservatory is a music service center with programs designed to develop all aspects of the students’ mind\, body and character. Our programs incorporate the holistic approach to developing the “total student” through the medium of music. We believe music is an art and a science involving both left and right brain activity. \nOur philosophy is that the aesthetic and technical aspects of music can be used as a medium to teach concepts and principles from an academic\, physical\, spiritual and social realm.\nThe Valley Conservatory faculty includes specialists in the areas of piano\, violin\, viola\, cello\, string bass\, guitar\, voice\, brass\, woodwinds\, percussion\, steel pan\, theory/composition\, art\, and preschool music programs. These personal instructor visits allow each artist to expand their skills and enjoyably realize their own ambitions in a relaxed\, friendly\, and comfortable way. Media include acrylic\, oil and watercolor. Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. \nThe following subjects will be covered: Day 1. Water. We learn to paint illusions of translucent water\, (lakes\, streams\, vernal pools) with reflections that shimmer and quiver. Your instructor will demonstrate aspects of painting water in oil\, watercolor and acrylic and mixed media. Learn how past masters like John Singer Sargent\, Winslow Homer and J.M.W. Turner painted water with drama and movement. Day 2. Luminous and Intimate Nature. We learn to paint close-up views of nature from novel points of view\, as if we were imbedded in a meadow or a garden. We learn to paint the feeling of infinite complexity of flora and the textures and patterns of closely observed nature. Artist’s techniques from Corot to Wyeth will be demonstrated here. Day 3. Perspective with Expression. Today\, get comfortable with varieties of perspective from linear perspective\, color perspective\, atmospheric perspective\, and the perspectives of disappearance\, smoothing\, and rounding\, among others. We consider how artists evoked the excitement of cities from Turner’s paintings of Venice to Monet’s Paris to contemporary artists’ visions of cities. Day 4. From Representation to Abstraction. Learn how to make your landscape subjects evocative and suggestive. We begin with the blurred\, dream-like landscape evocations of Inness\, Turner\, and the vaporous distillations of Whistler. We see how artists like Cezanne combined the biology of vision with historical landscape painting.

The body of work celebrates the connections of Appalachia with its historical and cultural counterpart in the British Isles\, highlighting Celtic traditions that were brought to America in the 18th century and are still practiced in the region today. The paintings are ornamented with Shuptrine’s hand-carved frames\, many of which are embedded with serpentine\, a mineral that is found not only along the entire Appalachian Trail\, but also in the regions of the British Isles where the original settlers to Appalachia were born. Organized by Alan Shuptrine and the Huntsville Museum of Art.

Using both wet-in-wet technique and detailed dry brush\, Alan Shuptrine will teach how to literally “sculpt” a floral subject into a painting from back to front\, and utilize the white of the paper to create dramatic light and shadow. Unlike most watercolorists who gradually add pigment to paper (from light-to-dark)\, Alan Shuptrine was influenced by Andrew Wyeth\, and his father\, Hubert Shuptrine\, who painted from dark-to-light\, much like an oil painter. This allows for bolder brushstrokes\, spontaneity\, and a fresher look. For those who have ever been intimidated by watercolor\, Alan will help build confidence as students develop their paintings.
