Look no further than Exploring Art Journaling: Visual Expressions! In this two-day workshop\, students will learn how to create a unique and meaningful visual journal that reflects your inner thoughts\, feelings\, and experiences. \nLearn a variety of techniques such as collage\, painting\, and drawing that will help you create a unique and personalized art journal. Come explore the wide and wonderful world of art journaling! \nWood is a mixed media artist from Lacey’s Spring\, Alabama. She has a bachelor’s degree in Engineering\, but after working for a few years\, decided to go back to college and take art classes. She enrolled with the University of Alabama in Huntsville and studied photography\, sculpture\, and painting. Over the years she expanded her creative skills with numerous master-led classes. Her work varies from mixed media and art journaling to sculpture and jewelry making. Her recent solo exhibitions include Dreams and Reality: The Artwork of Leslie Wood at Carnegie Visual Arts Center and Evelyn Burrows Museum\, and The Red Clay Survey: 2020 Exhibition of Contemporary Southern Art at the Huntsville Museum of Art. \nAn avid art journaler\, her journal work has been published numerous times in Somerset Studio’s ART Journaling magazine including a feature in the Spring 2023 issue. You can find her work at local shows such as Monte Sano Art Festival and Panoply Arts Festival. DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nRania Matar: SHE\nSunday\, February 11 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view Rania Matar: SHE. SHE features 50 large-scale color images of contemporary girls transitioning into womanhood by Lebanese-American photographer Rania Matar. Born and raised in Lebanon\, Matar moved to the United States in 1984. She has dedicated her work to exploring issues of personal and collective identity\, through photographs of female adolescence and adulthood. Matar works both in the United States and the Middle East\, in an effort to focus on notions of identity and individuality within the context of the underlying universality of these experiences. \nThis exhibition focuses on young women in their 20s—the ages of Matar’s own daughters—as they leave the cocoon of home and enter adulthood. In earlier projects\, Matar photographed young women in relation to the controlled environment of their bedrooms. Here\, she captures them in the larger arena they find themselves in after leaving home—the global and complicated backdrop that now constitutes their lives in transition. Arthurine Shackleford will perform from 6 – 7 p.m. \nArthurine Shackleford:  is an engineer who never lost her desire to express herself through the arts. Ms. Shackleford attended Alabama A. and M. University\n(AAMU) and later transferred to the University of Alabama in Huntsville\, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Industrial and Systems\nEngineering) and a Master of Science in Engineering (Industrial and Systems Engineering/Engineering Management). \nMusic is a passion for Ms. Shackleford. She sang in church choirs from the age of six. During her elementary and high school years\, she participated in school choirs\, where she was often one of the featured soloists\, and she played clarinet in the concert and marching bands. Ms. Shackleford received her classical training in voice while on music scholarship during her college years at AAMU. She has sung in several groups and choirs over the years to include the Dr. Horace Carney Chorale\, CEADS of Joy\, the Nell Lane Bradford Legacy Choir\, and the Huntsville Community Chorus. In recent years\, she released an EP of Christian music titled SING UNTO THE LORD. After hearing about several suicides of bullied young people\, Ms. Shackleford felt led to release a single she\nhad written titled Remember. Ms. Shackleford has also enjoyed performing on stage. She was a chorus member in the local production of the opera The Ballad of Baby Doe. She played\nthe roles of Jo Ann\, one of the Sweethearts\, and was part of the ensemble in a local production of Dreamgirls. Ms. Shackleford was also cast as an Emerald City Citizen and a Crow in a local production of the Wiz. Ms. Shackleford has been interested in art since childhood. She has had no formal education in art but has taken several community courses. The most impactful course was one taught by Don Howard\, a prominent artist in Huntsville\, Alabama. Ms. Shackleford has one open edition print titled May I go\, too? that is currently available at the Huntsville Revisited Museum. Ms. Shackleford regards her talents as gifts from God.  She knows that without God she can do nothing\, and He is worthy of all praise\, glory\, and honor!

DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nGinny Ruffner: Reforestation of the Imagination\nSunday\, February 18 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view Ginny Ruffner: Reforestation of the Imagination. \nGinny Ruffner: Reforestation of the Imagination combines traditional sculpture with augmented reality (AR). By using technology to overlay digital information onto sculptural objects\, two disparate environments are portrayed. The setting is an apocalyptic landscape far in the future. The initial environment consists of five landmasses\, which support the glass stumps. Except for the painted shelf mushrooms and tree rings on the stumps and logs\, the scene is colorless. The landmasses surround a sixth rocky outcropping that features a large fiberglass stump. The central stump sprouts beautifully grotesque bronze\, then glass appendages. This improbable growth has survived the devastation to create a new botany. \n“Other than the central stump\, the landscape appears at first glance to be barren. Yet\, upon viewing the tree rings aided by AR technology a second environment is revealed. Plants appear (both fruit and flowers) which have evolved from existing flora. They have developed dramatic appendages and the skills necessary to adapt and flourish in this radically different environment. From accessing nutrients in ways that symbiotically improve their surrounding conditions\, to cultivating protections from new threats\, these adaptations are unexpected\, beautiful\, and optimistic. This is nature reimagining itself. The imagination cannot be exterminated. It just recreates itself.” —Ginny Ruffner \nGinny Ruffner: Reforestation of the Imagination is organized by the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. We will have free admission on Sunday\, February 25 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Youth Art Month is observed nationally each March to emphasize the value of art education for children and to encourage public support for quality school art programs. It is hosted each year in Huntsville by The Huntsville Museum of Art’s Museum Academy. Youth Art Month also provides a forum for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences that are not possible in other curriculum subjects. The YAM 2024 is endorsed by The Alabama State Council on the Arts\, Alabama Arts Alliance\, and the Huntsville Museum of Art Guild. \n  \n  \n

Their community group has been together for over 15 years now\, we’re an inclusive all volunteer organization\, and perform locally for public events as well as for paid private events. Our members range from college students to retirees and include students as well as many professional musicians.

SUMMARY:Teacher Professional Development Workshop with Gary Chapman – CHARCOAL: Expressive Mark Making\, A Painter’s Approach to Drawing on Friday\, March 29\, 2024 from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:In this teacher profession development workshop\, you will explore charcoal as a drawing medium for expressive mark making. The goal is to develop a personal approach with loose and aggressive mark making and to combine additive and subtractive techniques using charcoal. While charcoal is the primary medium\, teachers may find time to explore combining additional media such as conté crayon\, spray paint\, ink and gesso. The workshop focuses on mark making as it relates to abstraction and later teachers may opt to explore different ways these same techniques can be applied to observational drawing for a provocative fusion of abstraction and realism. Teachers will have the opportunity to develop their visual skills through hands-on two-dimensional techniques using various drawing tools. The workshop is presented in conjunction with the Visual Arts Achievement Program (February 25)\, Congressional Art Competition and Youth Art Month (February 25-March 31) exhibitions. \nTo register\, email Mandy Durham\, Museum Academy Assistant\, mdurham@hsvmuseum.org. \n \nGary Chapman’s Biography: MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and BA and BS\, Berea College. Chapman has had over 80 solo exhibitions with institutions such as The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts\, The Arts Center of St. Petersburg\, FL; University of Cincinnati\, University of Georgia\, and the Indianapolis Art Center. He has also participated in numerous group and invitational exhibitions with regional\, national and international venues. Currently\, Chapman is Professor of Painting and Drawing\, Department of Art and Art History\, University of Alabama (UAB) at Birmingham. \n  \nChapman was awarded and named a Joan Mitchell CALL Legacy Artist in 2013 and has received numerous grants and fellowships\, including a 1996 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Painting from the Southern Arts Federation and a 2002 and 1994 Individual Artist Fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. His work has been reviewed extensively and is published in over 20 catalogs and books including the 4 Editions of New American Paintings.  \n  \n13 Paintings by Chapman have been purchased for the collections of ten museums in the southeast region as well as by many corporate and private collections throughout the country.  \n  \nWorkshop will be held on Friday\, March 29\, 2024 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Huntsville Museum of Art’s Museum Academy studios.  There is no fee for this workshop. Space is limited. DESCRIPTION:$5 After 5\nThursdays | 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.\nMembers: Free | Non-Members: $5\nMusic Performance 6:00-7:30 p.m. \nTwelve Persian Folk Songs Collected and Arranged for VOICE AND PIANOFORTE by Blair Fairchild performed by Golnaz Khazei\, Faraz Minooei and Reza Ahmadi \nFaraz Minooei was born in Tehran and began playing santur at the young age of nine. Faraz received his B.A. from San Francisco State University in 2008 as a Nagle Scholar and the first World/Jazz music major with santur as his primary instrument! As a full-time musician\, Faraz is a performer\, composer\, and teacher. He views studying music as a never-ending mission. In view of that\, he has also had the good fortune to study with masters such as M. R. Lotfi\, H. Omoumi\, Royal Hartigan\, Hafez Modirzadeh\, Michael Dessen\, Kojiro Umezaki and Christopher Dobrian. \nSince 2006\, he has lectured and performed at many universities including SFSU\, UCI\, UCLA\, UCSC Stanford University and at the Society of Ethnomusicology. He is the founder of Echomerz Ensemble and has performed with noted ensembles in the United States\, among which was his collaboration in 2009 with Yo Yo Ma and Kayhan Kalhor in the Silk Road Ensemble (for the 50th anniversary of the Lincoln Center) and the collaboration as a composer and santur player with the film director Bahram Beyzaie for three plays of Jana & Baladour\, Ardaviraf’s Report\, and Crossroads. Minooei is the founder and director of Bay Area Persian Music Ensemble. \nRecipient of numerous scholarships and grants\, he earned his Masters of Fine Arts degree in music with emphasis in Integrated Composition\, Improvisation\, and Technology from the University of California in Irvine. His thesis\, “Abstracting” Iranian Classical Music\, challenges the traditional practice of Iranian Classical Music to introduce innovative and transformative functions of the music in contemporary society. \n  \nGolnaz Khazei is a native of Tehran\, Iran and is a renowned percussionist specializing in the instrument of Daf. Golnaz has performed concerts and collegiate workshops\, individually and with diverse performers throughoutIran\, United State as well internationally in Armenia\, Germany\, Spain\, Italy\, Estonia\, Switzerland\, Netherlands\, Belgium. Golnaz has worked and performed with the legendary. Kurdish folk lore master\, Khalife Mirza Agha Ghosi\, Mehrdad Karim Khavari and Alireza Feyz Bashipoor.In 2020 Golnaz and Faraz Minooei collaborated and co/founded C-Sharp International\, LLC (www.csharp-int.com)  for the preservation and growth of classical Persian Music.In 2022 Golnaz and Faraz published their first Album ” BARA” (composed by Faraz Minooei). Golnaz has also performed in the following Albums:1. It lasted 14 hours and cost eight American lives while the Taliban suffered an estimated 150 killed. Twenty-seven more American warriors were wounded. Romesha deployed twice to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom\, and once to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. \nRomesha received the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a Section Leader with Bravo Troop\, during combat operations against an armed enemy at Combat Outpost Keating in Afghanistan on October 3\, 2009. On that morning\, Staff Sergeant Romesha and his comrades awakened to an attack by an estimated 300 enemy fighters occupying the high ground on all four sides of the complex\, employing concentrated fire from recoilless rifles\, rocket propelled grenades\, anti-aircraft machine guns\, mortars and small arms fire.
