At 6 p.m.\, singer Arthurine Shackleford will perform in the galleries. \nAbout Arthurine Shackleford: \nArthurine Shackleford is an engineer who never lost her desire to express herself through the arts. She attended Alabama A&M University (AAMU) and later transferred to the University of Alabama in Huntsville\, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Industrial and Systems Engineering) and a Master of Science in Engineering (Industrial and Systems Engineering/Engineering Management). \nMusic is a passion for Ms. Shackleford. She sang in church choirs from the age of six. During her elementary and high school years\, she participated in school choirs\, where she was often one of the featured soloists\, and she played clarinet in the concert and marching bands. Ms. Shackleford received her classical training in voice while on a music scholarship during her college years at AAMU. She has sung in several groups and choirs over the years\, including the Dr. Horace Carney Chorale\, CEADS of Joy\, the Nell Lane Bradford Legacy Choir\, and the Huntsville Community Chorus. In recent years\, she released an EP of Christian music titled SING UNTO THE LORD. After hearing about several suicides of bullied young people\, Ms. Shackleford felt led to release a single she had written titled Remember. \nMs. Shackleford has also enjoyed performing on stage. She was a chorus member in the local production of the opera The Ballad of Baby Doe. She played the roles of Jo Ann\, one of the Sweethearts\, and was part of the ensemble in a local production of Dreamgirls. Ms. Shackleford was also cast as an Emerald City Citizen and a Crow in a local production of The Wiz.

SUMMARY:CLOSING DAY: A World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\nA World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection\nSunday\, February 26 | 12 – 5 p.m.\nEnjoy a last chance to view A World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection. \nUtilizing works found within the Museum’s acclaimed permanent collection\, A World Within presents a diverse array of art by women that explores a range of media and subject matter with broad variation in style and method. \nTraditionally accepted feminine art practices are being embraced\, ignored\, or transformed\, as each artist sees fit\, across the spectrum of women’s art. Accordingly\, this exhibition examines some of the ways that female artists evolve their chosen mediums\, contemplate the world\, and represent themselves and other women. Throughout the exhibition there is a subtle duality at play\, encompassing both what is portrayed and the imagined world of the artist’s creation. The viewer is thus invited to consider the works on display in a complex way\, and to make unexpected connections throughout the galleries.

SUMMARY:CLOSING DAY: 2023 Gala Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Closing Day\n2023 Gala Art Exhibition\nSaturday\, March 4\nThe 2023 Gala Art Exhibition will close after the third and final event of the Gala\, the Cocktail Party and Silent Auction. \nThe Gala is an important fundraiser for the Huntsville Museum of Art. The Gala Art Exhibition presents over 100 artworks in a range of media and styles\, to be auctioned to the highest bidder during the annual Gala event. This year’s featured artist is Lesley Powell. Organized by HMA. \nAbout Lesley Powell: \nLesley Powell finds inspiration in translating her own perception of a scene into a painting that involves the viewer and calls forth the viewer’s own responses.  Her subjects range from intimate still lifes and interiors to sweeping outdoor vistas. Powell works with a classical approach to color and composition\, but her point of view is fresh and contemporary. She eliminates extraneous details and focuses instead on the most compelling aspects of her subject. She uses simple but interesting shapes to convey these aspects. Lesley’s still-life paintings are sensitively observed in the quiet of her studio. Similarly\, her landscapes and interiors all originate from firsthand observation and work on location. Larger studio works spring from her in-person studies and sketches. \nLesley Powell lives in Charlotte\, NC\, but her easel accompanies her on travels far and wide. She has studied on an ongoing basis with internationally acclaimed artist Maggie Siner. Powell is represented by Huff Harrington Fine Art in Atlanta. Her work is also on her website: www.lesleypowellart.com.
