SUMMARY:Alan Shuptrine: The Serpentine Chain OPENS
DESCRIPTION:On Display Now – August 5\, 2018 \nThis exhibition of thematic watercolor paintings by Tennessee artist Alan Shuptrine pays tribute to the land and people found along the Appalachian Trail\, and of the distinctive culture that endures from the mountains of Maine to Georgia. The body of work celebrates the connections of Appalachia with its historical and cultural counterpart in the British Isles\, highlighting Celtic traditions that were brought to America in the 18th century and are still practiced in the region today. The paintings are ornamented with Shuptrine’s hand-carved frames\, many of which are embedded with serpentine\, a mineral that is found not only along the entire Appalachian Trail\, but also in the regions of the British Isles where the original settlers to Appalachia were born. Organized by Alan Shuptrine and the Huntsville Museum of Art.

SUMMARY:Master Artist Workshop: Alan Shuptrine
DESCRIPTION:THIS CLASS IS SOLD OUT!\n[CLICK HERE TO VIEW UPCOMING MASTER ARTIST WORKSHOPS]\nLearn from a Master! Don’t miss the unique opportunity to receive one-on-one instruction from a nationally-recognized Master Artist! For more information about individual instructors\, please visit their websites. \nMaster Artist Workshops are held in the Museum Academy classrooms located downstairs in the Museum. Enter on the North Patio – pond side at Big Spring Park. \nIf you are interested in a Master Artist Workshop that is SOLD OUT\, please email your name and phone number to Laura E. Smith\, Director of Education/Museum Academy at lsmith@hsvmuseum.org to be added to the wait list. Members registration fee refers to Huntsville Museum of Art members. \nABOUT THIS CLASS:\nLearn to paint the dogwood tree and incorporate it into realistic watercolor landscapes. Using both wet-in-wet technique and detailed dry brush\, Alan Shuptrine will teach how to literally “sculpt” a floral subject into a painting from back to front\, and utilize the white of the paper to create dramatic light and shadow. Unlike most watercolorists who gradually add pigment to paper (from light-to-dark)\, Alan Shuptrine was influenced by Andrew Wyeth\, and his father\, Hubert Shuptrine\, who painted from dark-to-light\, much like an oil painter. This allows for bolder brushstrokes\, spontaneity\, and a fresher look. For those who have ever been intimidated by watercolor\, Alan will help build confidence as students develop their paintings. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to have personal one-on-one instruction from a nationally recognized watercolor realist. Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced.

SUMMARY:Docent-led\, Public Tour of Encounters: Jim Jobe
DESCRIPTION:Docent-led\, Public Tour of Encounters: Jim Jobe\nJune 24 | 2-2:45 p.m.\nMeet in the Main Lobby off of Church Street \nFree to Museum members; Included in general admission for non-members \nLearn more about the nostalgic works included in this exhibition during this informative public tour led by a trained Museum Docent. \nThe latest exhibition in this long-standing showcase for outstanding regional contemporary art focuses on the accomplished works of the respected Huntsville artist\, Jim Jobe. Jobe’s paintings and drawings incorporate both pure abstraction and an eccentric combination of abstract and representational elements. Much of his imagery suggests both direct and peripheral perception. An avid hiker\, the artist describes this phenomenon in his work: “When you’re hiking\, you can stop and frame a bucolic setting\, but that’s not how you experience it. In reality\, imagery comes in constantly from all sorts of directions. It’s how I see things. Everywhere\, I see these puzzle-pieces of interwoven connections.” \nBorn in Buffalo\, New York\, Jobe spent his youth in a military family traveling throughout the United States and abroad\, finally moving from Athens\, Greece and settling in the Southeast. He earned a B.S. in art education from Freed-Hardiman College in Henderson\, TN\, as well as B.F.A. and M.F.A. in fine art from the University of Alabama\, and has worked as an artist\, art educator\, and strong advocate for arts education. \nPrimarily recognized as a painter\, Jobe works in several disciplines and mediums. For a few years\, in an effort to refocus his work\, the artist stopped painting altogether and tried to re-teach himself how to draw. Admiration for the craftsmanship of woodworkers and ceramicists led him to approach drawing more as a way of achieving mastery with a pencil as a tool than as a way to produce imagery. This led him more deeply into abstraction\, studying the interplay between line and shape and color.

SUMMARY:Docent-led\, Public tour of The Life & Art of Mary Petty
DESCRIPTION:Docent-led\, Public Tour of The Life and Art of Mary Petty\nJuly 15 | 1-1:45 p.m.\nMeet in the Main Lobby off of Church Street \nFree to Museum members; Included in general admission for non-members \nLearn more about the nostalgic works included in this exhibition during this informative public tour led by a trained Museum Docent. \nAmerican illustrator Mary Petty began her career with The New Yorker magazine in 1927. During the 1930s the artist became more and more preoccupied with the upper class society who inhabited the brownstones and mansions of the Upper East Side of New York. The lifestyle and attitudes of wealthy\, old money Victorian style society became the grist for Petty’s keen observations. Her satire\, nearly always on target\, was of a gentle variety that poked fun at human frailties and never seemed mean spirited. Central to her imagery were the characters of Mrs. Peabody and her maid\, Fay. Petty used these two characters to explain\, in a humorous vein\, the foibles of New York’s elite. This exhibition includes 30 original watercolors dating from the early 1940s through the mid-1960s\, which became iconic New Yorker magazine covers. Organized by the Syracuse University Art Galleries\, Syracuse\, NY.

SUMMARY:Members' Lecture & Preview Party for American Impressionist Art from the Thomas Clark Collection
DESCRIPTION:LECTURE IS SOLD OUT \nPlease join us for a Lecture & Preview Reception with collector Thomas Clark \nSaturday\, July 28\, 2018\nLecture: 5:30-6 p.m.\nReception: 6-7:30 p.m. \nMembers: Free | Non-members: $25\nSeating limited to 175.\n \nOne of the finest private holdings of American impressionist art in upstate New York\, the Thomas Clark Collection is a testament to the enduring legacy of Impressionist painting in American art. The collection emphasizes representative examples from the last great generation of artists who emerged both during and in the aftermath of the American Impressionist movement (1880-1920). These artists were the students and sketching partners of the seminal figures in the development of Impressionism in America\, such as William Merritt Chase\, Willard L. Metcalf\, John Henry Twachtman\, and Robert Henri. The American Impressionists were primarily concerned with capturing the effects of light\, color\, and atmosphere achieved by painting directly from nature — out-of-doors — rather than in the studio. This generation of landscape painters flourished in areas such as Old Lyme\, Connecticut; Cape Ann\, Massachusetts; New Hope\, Pennsylvania; and Woodstock\, New York; as well as areas of Vermont and California. The exhibition includes about 70 works by artists such as Arthur C. Goodwin\, Emile Gruppé\, George Loftus Noyes\, and Harry Aiken. Organized by HMA.

SUMMARY:Docent-led\, Public tour of Alan Shuptrine: The Serpentine Chain
DESCRIPTION:Docent-led\, Public Tour of Alan Shuptrine: The Serpentine Chain\nAugust 5 | 2-2:45 p.m.\nMeet in the Main Lobby off of Church Street \nFree to Museum members; Included in general admission for non-members \nLearn more about the nostalgic works included in this exhibition during this informative public tour led by a trained Museum Docent. \nThis exhibition of thematic watercolor paintings by Tennessee artist Alan Shuptrine pays tribute to the land and people found along the Appalachian Trail\, and of the distinctive culture that endures from the mountains of Maine to Georgia.

SUMMARY:Gallery Walk for Looking at the Collection: Nature's Realm
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Walk with Peter Baldaia\, Director of Curatorial Affairs\nSunday\, August 19 | 2-4 p.m. \nMembers: Free | Non-members: Included with general admission \nLearn more about the nostalgic works included in this exhibition during an informative tour led by HMA’s Peter Baldaia. \nThe Huntsville Museum of Art is pleased to showcase a selection of artworks from its own permanent collection that explores aspects of the natural world we all inhabit. Some works are gifts from generous donors\, while others were added through purchase. The Museum’s collection currently totals over 3\,500 works of art\, providing a rich re-source for its curators to develop exhibitions such as these. \nNature’s Realm focuses on contemporary works of art from the collection whose sub-jects reference the landscape and its flora and fauna. The exhibition highlights a range of artistic “takes” on the theme\, offering the viewer the opportunity to compare and contrast differing approaches to composition\, subject matter and storytelling. On view are paintings\, drawings\, prints\, photographs\, and three-dimensional works in glass\, metal\, wood and ceramic. Works range stylistically from the hard-edged realism of Nall Hollis’ deconstructed flowers; to the softly color-drenched landscapes of George Cress; to the sheer abstraction of Pat Musick‘s mixed-media sculptures. \nWith this exhibition we salute the depth and diversity of the Museum’s permanent col-lection\, and thank those artists whose works have enriched the cultural life of our region.
