SUMMARY:Opening Event for "Our Shared Heritage - 1850-1940"
DESCRIPTION:The Opening Celebration of Our Shared Heritage: Alabama Artists from the Collection – 1850-1940 \nMembers’ Lecture & Reception\nSunday\, January 27\, 2019\nLecture by Frances Osborn Robb: 2:00 p.m.\nReception hosted by Foundation Board: 3:00 p.m. \nMuseum members: Free | Non-members: Included in General Admission \nAlabama’s foremost historian of our state’s photography is Huntsvillian Frances Osborn Robb. She is convinced that every photograph holds a story\, and she has sought them out for more than thirty years. She is\, as she says\, “passionate about old photographs.” Come see the photographs and hear the stories! \nBiography: Frances Osborn Robb is a native of Birmingham and a Distinguished Alumna of Birmingham-Southern College. She holds graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina and Yale University and has taught at Texas Christian University\, the University of North Texas\, and the University of the South at Sewanee. She has researched vintage Deep South photographs for more than 30 years. Her book\, Shot in Alabama: A History of Photography\, 1839-1941\, and a List of Photographers\, (it’s heavy: don’t drop it on your foot!)\, is a narrative history of our state’s first century of photography with a list of more than 1\,400 photographers who worked here. She is a regular contributor to Alabama Heritage magazine and is presently working on the story of Birmingham’s first resident photographer\, A. C. Oxford. \n  \nENDORSED BY

SUMMARY:Lecture & Preview Reception for "Encounters: Jared Small"
DESCRIPTION:Encounters: Jared Small\nGrisham Gallery\nOn Display February 3 – May 19\, 2019 \nMembers’ Lecture and Preview Party \nFriday\, February 1\, 2019 \nLecture by Jared Small: 6 p.m.\nReception catered by Chef Narvell: 7-8:30 p.m.\nHosted by Special Committee \nMember Tickets: $25 | Non-member Tickets: $50\nTickets available on January 10th\nSeating limited to 175 \n[Purchase Tickets Here] \nJoin us for the Members’ Lecture & Preview Party of Encounters: Jared Small.  This exhibition focuses on the accomplished paintings of this emerging Memphis artist. Small’s paintings on panel and vellum often feature flowers floating in ethereal spaces and Southern homes existing in ambiguity. Essentially self-taught\, Small’s ability to detail exactly what he sees is one of his greatest talents. He describes his practice as\, “…trying to accomplish a dreamlike state. I’m imagining other people’s memories — fading\, but still there.” Small harnesses a style similar to magical realism\, with the center of each painting focused on a painstakingly accurate image while the background dissolves into abstract elements. This technique allows the artist to hypnotize the viewer into a dream-like state\, caught between the realities of the obvious and the mysteries that seem to exist beneath the surface. Organized by HMA. \n

SUMMARY:Voices of Our Times: Ambassador Andrew Young\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Tickets available now! \nAmbassador Andrew Young\, Jr. \n \nThursday\, February 14\, 2019\n7:00 p.m. in Loretta Spencer Hall \nMember Tickets: $35 | Non-member Tickets: $55\nMember tickets available January 3 | Non-member tickets available January 31 \n[Click here for Tickets] \n \nAbbreviated Biography: \nAndrew Young\, Jr. was an activist for the Civil Rights Movement. He became a member of Congress\, mayor of Atlanta and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. \nWorking as a pastor in Georgia\, Young first became part of the Civil Rights Movement when he organized voter registration drives. In 1964\, Young became the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s (SCLC) executive director and helped draw up the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was with Dr. King in Memphis\, Tennessee\, on April 4\, 1968\, the day of King’s assassination. Following King’s death\, Young became executive vice president of the SCLC. \nIn 1970\, Young left the SCLC to make a run for Congress\, but was defeated at the polls. Two years later\, he ran again\, and this time was elected to the House of Representatives. Young was the first African American to represent Georgia in Congress since Reconstruction. In his time as a legislator\, he supported programs for the poor\, educational initiatives and human rights. \nDuring Jimmy Carter’s run for the presidency\, Young offered key political support; when Carter was in office\, he chose Young to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Young left his seat in Congress to take the position. While Ambassador\, he advocated for human rights on a global scale\, such as sanctions to oppose rule by apartheid in South Africa. \nYoung was elected as Atlanta’s mayor in 1981. After two terms as mayor\, he failed in his attempt to secure the Democratic nomination to run for governor of Georgia. However\, Young was successful in his campaign for Atlanta to host the Olympic Games in 1996. \nFind more information about the event here: hsvmuseum.org/ambassador-andrew-young-jr-february-14-2019/
