DESCRIPTION:Public Enemy\, 1987\, archival vintage exhibition print\, 13 x 19 in. (frame to 24 x 30 in.) \nThis exhibition features 36 hand-selected silver gelatin and color photographs of important African American artists and performers taken by Jack Mitchell over a career spanning five decades. Mitchell died in 2013 at age 88. His first cover photograph for a major magazine was of Haitian dancers for the May 1951 issue of Color Magazine. Exhibition highlights include singer-songwriter Harry Belafonte\, singer Whitney Houston (in her first photo session with a professional photographer)\, dance company founder Alvin Ailey\, writer Toni Morrison\, singer Roberta Flack\, soprano Leontyne Price\, hip hop group Public Enemy\, singer Donna Summer\, actress Cicely Tyson\, and actor Ben Vereen.

DESCRIPTION:Accessible Art Works: Deaf/Hard of Hearing Session\nFree\nRegister for session here!\nThe Huntsville Museum of Art is excited to announce the  Accessible Art Works (AAW)\, a program developed by the Education Department in collaboration with people with disabilities. \nEach session will allow an assistant or companion to attend with the workshop participant. The Accessible Art Program gives one the opportunity to experience a docent led private tour of specific art pieces from a current exhibit\, followed by an art making session led by a trained instructor. Accessible Art Works sessions are offered on a monthly basis year round.  The Deaf/Hard of Hearing session will have an ASL Qualified Interpreter during the tour and the art making as well. We are pleased to offer the Accessible Art Workshop free of charge to participants and a companion thanks to a generous grant from the Lowe Foundation and a partnership with the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB). \nIt is strongly recommended  that attendees pre-register for each session as they fill up quickly. DESCRIPTION:Art Journaling: Visual Storytelling with Leslie Wood\nSkill Level: Beginner to Advanced\n$275 Members | $300 Non-members\nRegister for workshop here!\n \nIn this two day workshop\, you will explore the many different sides of art journals; from getting past the blank pages to tips and techniques in capturing your words and imagery. An art journal is a combination of visual and written imagery that captures thoughts\, ideas and images in a visual way. They can be travel logs\, dream diaries\, art techniques\, therapy logs\, storybooks or anything. Anything goes in an art journal from using mixed media and collage\, to paint \, to pen and charcoal. \nThis workshop will show you some fun techniques to get past the blank white pages staring at you. It will introduce you to the different types of books and products that are commonly used for journaling. You will learn some techniques for working in journals that will aid in the creation of the pages in your own journal to start your journey in this medium. \nWood has been creating art ever since she can remember. She has a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering\, but after working for a few years\, decided to go back to college and take art classes. She enrolled with the University of Alabama in Huntsville and studied photography\, sculpting and painting. Over the years she expanded her creative skills with numerous master-led classes. Her work varies from mixed media and art journaling to sculpture and jewelry making. An avid art journaler\, her journal work has been published numerous times in Somerset Studio’s ART Journaling magazine including a feature in the 2016 Winter and 2017 Spring editions. DESCRIPTION:Learning is fun at the Huntsville Museum of Art for children ages 2-3 and their parent/guardian. Each Artsy Tots class will introduce toddlers to art and the museum through age-appropriate artful short stories\, gallery play activities\, and an art activity. The program helps with color recognition\, fine motor skills\, hand-eye coordination and more! Recommended for ages 24 months and up. There will be new themes for each class. Toddler classes last 45-minutes and are led by specially trained museum educators. \n  \nArtsy Tots classes are held on one Friday a month from 11:00-11:45 a.m.  Class size is limited to 12 children. One adult chaperone is required for every two children. DESCRIPTION:The Huntsville Museum of Art is pleased to present the sixth installment of its exhibition series focused on contemporary artists linked in terms of subject matter and sensibility. The latest installment of this series features two artists from New Orleans whose works revolve around themes of childhood\, nature\, innocence\, and loss. Stephen Paul Day creates skillfully executed paintings and sculptures that are whimsical and charming\, reflecting aspects of his boyhood as well as folktale symbolism. Sibylle Peretti creates glass sculptures and multimedia collages which combine photography and drawing with surface techniques such as engraving\, mirroring\, and glass slumping. The world Peretti creates for the children in her pieces is mysterious\, alluring and potentially fraught with danger\, underscoring their fragility and humanity. \n

DESCRIPTION:Mary was chosen for the role of “Scout” at the age of ten\, with no prior acting experience. She won an Oscar nomination for best-supporting actress. At that time she was the youngest person ever to do so. \nAfter To Kill a Mockingbird\, 1962\, she appeared in two other films\, This Property is Condemned\, 1966\, with Robert Redford and Natalie Wood; and Let’s Kill Uncle\, 1966. She had TV appearances on Dr. Kildare “Sister Mike\,” 1963; and Twilight Zone “The Bewitchin’ Pool\,” 1964\, before retiring from acting to pursue an education as a teenager. \nOver the years\, she maintained close contact with Gregory Peck “Atticus” and occasionally accompanied him on his one-man-show lecture tours and award ceremonies. \nIn April of 1997\, Mary had a vision to reunite the cast and creative team for a national satellite broadcast to US schools. \nMary now maintains a busy schedule lecturing to audiences internationally about the book and the film. DESCRIPTION:Accessible Art Works: Deaf/Hard of Hearing Session\nFree\nRegister for session here!\nThe Huntsville Museum of Art is excited to announce the  Accessible Art Works (AAW)\, a program developed by the Education Department in collaboration with people with disabilities. \nEach session will allow an assistant or companion to attend with the workshop participant. The Accessible Art Program gives one the opportunity to experience a docent led private tour of specific art pieces from a current exhibit\, followed by an art making session led by a trained instructor. Accessible Art Works sessions are offered on a monthly basis year round.  The Deaf/Hard of Hearing session will have an ASL Qualified Interpreter during the tour and the art making as well. We are pleased to offer the Accessible Art Workshop free of charge to participants and a companion thanks to a generous grant from the Lowe Foundation and a partnership with the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB). \nIt is strongly recommended  that attendees pre-register for each session as they fill up quickly. Inspired by the Museum’s exhibition\, Telling Tales: Narrative Works from the Collection. The exhibition explores some of the earliest evidence of human art. It suggests that people told stories with pictures\, and narrative art can be found across nearly every culture and time period in human history. Telling Tales presents historical and contemporary works from the Museum’s collection that bring to light how stories can be told through different media\, styles and time periods. The teacher professional development workshop will assist teachers in aiding students to develop critical thinking skills and in the understanding of the creative process. Jennifer Redstreake Geary will introduce ways of working with painting techniques with water-based media. Discover ways to add unique choices of color and composition . . . plus a little imagination. Teachers will learn ways to enhance their visual arts classroom curricula. Teachers will have the opportunity to participate in docent-led tours of the exhibition. Each participant will complete a finished work of art! \nJennifer Redstreake Geary’s Biography: Jen has been painting since first grade. You could say she was probably painting in the womb\, too. DESCRIPTION:Ladson – Spartan\, 32 x 41.5 \nEncounters: Charles Ladson focuses on the accomplished paintings of this mid-career artist from Macon\, GA. Ladson’s works mix conventional aspects of painting like texture\, layering\, perspective\, transparency\, and detail — to create images that evoke a sense of mystery and dreamlike reality. Like much Southern art\, his paintings have a strong narrative component. Ladson received his BFA degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York and his MFA degree from the University of Georgia. DESCRIPTION:The 29th Annual Gala Committee and the Huntsville Museum of Art are thrilled to welcome celebrated interior designer\, Richard Keith Langham\, as the Gala Luncheon speaker on Tuesday\, March 3. \nAbout Richard Keith Langham: \nBrewton Alabama born\, Manhattan-based Richard Keith Langham has been a force in the decorating world for nearly thirty years.  He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and studied at the Study Center for the Fine and Decorative Arts in London.  After apprenticing under Mark Hampton and ten years with Irvine & Fleming\, Langham founded his own firm in 1990.  His keen eye and ebullient talent serve well in creating his signature rooms – that speak to the past in a fresh way and are brimming with luscious color\, pattern and couture detailing. \nHe worked with some of the city’s most legendary ladies – Mrs. William F. Buckley\, Jr and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis\, who once proclaimed him to have “a sorcerer’s eye”. \nLangham has been named to Elle Décor’s A List and Architectural Digest’s AD 100 and is in high demand as a speaker on decorating around the country. \nHis book “About Decorating – the Remarkable Rooms of Richard Keith Langham” was published by Rizzoli October 2017 and is in its third printing.
