Over the course of his decades-long career\, Parrish journeyed from a concept artist for aerospace industries to an acclaimed photorealist painter. From early experimentation to the iconic portrayal of motorcycles that brought him national acclaim\, these artworks from the Huntsville Museum of Art’s permanent collection trace the evolution of Parrish’s style and allow for a rare glimpse into an artist’s journey. \n\n\n\nDavid Parrish (1939-2021) was a pivotal figure in the American Photorealist movement. Born and raised in Birmingham\, Alabama\, he moved to Huntsville in the 1960s. Parrish began painting in the early 1960s after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama. He began working as a technical illustrator and exhibit designer for the Marshall Space Flight Center. Originally hoping to be a magazine illustrator\, fate led him to become a concept artist for the aerospace firm Hayes International in Huntsville\, Alabama. In 1971\, he left to begin a full-time career as a fine artist. Today\, Parrish is internationally known for the pop culture subject matter and photorealistic detail of his paintings. Some of his most famous works include abstracted close-ups of motorcycles and glossy still-life compositions featuring iconic American entertainers like Elvis and Marilyn Monroe. \nBy the early 1970s\, Parrish debuted in the New York scene\, finding success as a first-generation photorealist. From 1973-1976\, he was represented by Sidney Janis Gallery and then moved to Nancy Hoffman Gallery. Then in 1987\, Parrish joined Louis K. Meisel Gallery\, founded by art dealer and gallery owner Louis K. Meisel\, who coined the term “Photorealism.” Together with Meisel and other photorealist artists\, Parrish helped define the iconic movement. Parrish became known for painting elements of Americana. His motorcycle paintings were his early trademark\, and during the late 1980s into the 1990s he painted complex\, intricate porcelain still lifes of Marilyn Monroe\, Elvis\, and other pop culture icons. Special Musical Performances start at 5:15 p.m with Prevailing Winds Flute Ensemble & Flying on Instruments Jazz Ensemble performing in the Great Hall.Prevailing Winds Flute Ensemble: A community flute choir from the Huntsville-Madison-Tennessee Valley area. They perform using all members of the flute family – piccolo\, flute\, alto flute\, bass flute\, and contrabass flute (the only one in Huntsville!). This community group has been together for over 15 years. They are an inclusive\, all-volunteer organization that performs locally for public events as well as paid private events. The members range from college students to retirees and include both students and many professional musicians.

For the past few years he has been the guitar player in Huntsville based rock group Black Market Salesmen. He has worked with Grammy nominated musician/producer Joey Huffman. Shane opened for artists such as Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle and was featured in international magazines Relix and Classic Rock. In 2020 Shane got a few friends together to work on solo material and recorded his self-titled album. Since then they have been performing as the Shane Davis Group. Shane’s music has been compared to Neil Young\, Ryan Adams\, Townes Van Sandt and The Grateful Dead.

He was the first guitarist to be awarded an individual artist’s fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts\, and he is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at UAH\, where he directs the guitar program. He performed his European debut with solo concerts for the Nonsuch Guitar Society in London and the Old Malthouse Music Society in Sawbridgeworth. In addition to solo work\, he has performed concertos with orchestra and small ensembles including instrumentalists and vocalists. His collaborations with pianist Ingrid von Spakovsky include a CD on ACA Digital that received rave reviews in Fanfare and 20th Century Guitar magazines\, interviews on BBC York and Temple Public Radio\, a tour of England\, a New York City recital debut\, and performances throughout the U.S. Their CD Consonare has been broadcasted on New York City’s NPR affiliate WNYC\, WABE Atlanta\, and WLRH Huntsville.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Stetson University in 2007 and a Master’s degree in Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 2013 and was inducted into Delta Mu Delta\, and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. \nMatthew was an elementary school music teacher for three years in Pensacola\, Florida. He has served as Music Director and Music Chairman for the Athens Ward\, Madison Stake\, and Stuttgart Germany International Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He has performed with the Pensacola Opera company\, Opera Huntsville\, the Huntsville Community Chorus Association\, the Huntsville Christmas Festival Choir\, and the Huntsville Patriotic Choir featuring the Army Materiel Command Band. \n  \n \nCelese Sanders: Celese Sanders is a soprano based in Huntsville. She sings any chance she gets and is currently singing with Rocket Harmony\, Huntsville Community Chorus\, and as a staff singer at Huntsville First United Methodist Church. She has also performed with many local organizations in opera and musical theater. Some of her most notable roles include Despina in Cosi fan tutte\, Miss Pinkerton in The Old Maid and the Thief\, and Fiona in Shrek. She is a blessed mother of three children who support her and make her heart happy. \n  \nJeremy Howe is a tuba player and bass-baritone vocalist with over 30 years of professional experience performing throughout the world. During his twenty-year career as an Army Musician he performed for presidents\, on National Public Radio\, CNN\, and in more parades and ceremonies than he can count. While serving in assignments throughout the United States and overseas\, he has performed with and led a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles ranging from traditional brass quintets and jazz bands to a funk-rock band “Rendezvous Groove” who was a featured ensemble at the 2011 W.C. Handy Festival in Florence\, Alabama\, and a barbershop quartet “7-Ball”\, which won the Army-wide “Ensemble of the Year” award for 2011.
