DESCRIPTION:Join us at the museum:\n$5 After 5pm\nCHROME: David Parrish Presentation with\nElizabeth K. Harris\,\nDirector of the Louis K. Meisel Gallery\non August 1st\, 2024 from 6-8 PM \nincluded with $5 After 5 PM admission.\nFree for Museum members; Wine will be available for purchase. \nElizabeth K. Harris is the Director of the Louis K. Meisel Gallery in New York. She has spent the past 16 years studying and working with painters who specialize in Photorealism. She has coauthored and/or been the lead archivist on the following publications: Photorealism in the Digital Age (2013)\, Tom Blackwell: The Complete Paintings\, 1970 – 2014 (2016)\, Rod Penner: Paintings\, 1987-2022 (2023)\, Bertrand Meniel (due out in Fall 2024).  She holds a BA in Art History and received a MA in Visual Arts Administration from NYU. \n  \n\n\n \nDavid Parrish (American\, 1939-2021)\, Goldwing\, 2016. Oil on canvas. 38 x 50 in. Huntsville Museum of Art\, Bequest\, 2023.07.07 \n\nCHROME: David Parrish\nMarch 9-September 8\, 2024 | Grisham Gallery\nThe work of late Huntsville-based artist David Parrish stuns with its technical virtuosity. Over the course of his decades-long career\, Parrish journeyed from a concept artist for aerospace industries to an acclaimed photorealist painter. From early experimentation to the iconic portrayal of motorcycles that brought him national acclaim\, these artworks from the Huntsville Museum of Art’s permanent collection trace the evolution of Parrish’s style and allow for a rare glimpse into an artist’s journey. \n\n\n\nDavid Parrish (1939-2021) was a pivotal figure in the American Photorealist movement. Born and raised in Birmingham\, Alabama\, he moved to Huntsville in the 1960s. Parrish began painting in the early 1960s after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama. He began working as a technical illustrator and exhibit designer for the Marshall Space Flight Center. Originally hoping to be a magazine illustrator\, fate led him to become a concept artist for the aerospace firm Hayes International in Huntsville\, Alabama. In 1971\, he left to begin a full-time career as a fine artist. Today\, Parrish is internationally known for the pop culture subject matter and photorealistic detail of his paintings. Some of his most famous works include abstracted close-ups of motorcycles and glossy still-life compositions featuring iconic American entertainers like Elvis and Marilyn Monroe. \nBy the early 1970s\, Parrish debuted in the New York scene\, finding success as a first-generation photorealist. From 1973-1976\, he was represented by Sidney Janis Gallery and then moved to Nancy Hoffman Gallery. Then in 1987\, Parrish joined Louis K. Meisel Gallery\, founded by art dealer and gallery owner Louis K. Meisel\, who coined the term “Photorealism.” Together with Meisel and other photorealist artists\, Parrish helped define the iconic movement. Parrish became known for painting elements of Americana. His motorcycle paintings were his early trademark\, and during the late 1980s into the 1990s he painted complex\, intricate porcelain still lifes of Marilyn Monroe\, Elvis\, and other pop culture icons. He has been exhibited widely throughout the United States and internationally\, including for the first time at the Huntsville Museum of Art in 1977. \nOrganized by the Huntsville Museum of Art. \n\n\nThank you\, Sponsors!\n Artists’ Circle: \nPatsy and Frank Haws\nMedia Sponsor:\n \n  \nAdditional Support: \nAdditional Support: Huntsville Museum of Art Guild\, Alabama State Council on the Arts. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Opening Day - "Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass"
DESCRIPTION:October 25\, 2024 – January 12\, 2025 | Huth\, Boeing\, Salmon & Haws Galleries\n\nClearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass is a first-of-its-kind\, groundbreaking exhibition giving broader and overdue recognition to a wide range of contemporary Native American and indigenous\, Pacific Rim artists working in glass. \nThe stunning art in the exhibition embodies the intellectual content of Native traditions\, newly illuminated by the unique properties that can only be achieved by working with glass. Whether reinterpreting traditional stories and designs in the medium of glass\, or expressing contemporary issues affecting tribal societies\, Native glass artists have created a content-laden body of work. These artists have melded the aesthetics and properties inherent in glass art with their cultural ways of knowing. \nA secondary focus of the exhibition—a historical perspective—presents the fascinating story of how glass art came to Indian country\, mainly through the pioneering work of Lloyd Kiva New (Cherokee)\, a founder of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA)\, and of Dale Chihuly\, who taught the first Native artists to work in glass. While Chihuly is not Native\, he has long wielded a major influence on American Indian glass artists\, and his own art has (in turn) taken inspiration from the designs and shapes of Native basketry and textiles. This comprehensive exhibition is the first of its kind to salute and document the sublime flowering of Native glass art. \n\n \nDr. Letitia Chambers \n\n  \nVisit: hsvmuseum.org/clearly-indigenous-native-visions-reimagined-in-glass-october-25-2024-january-12-2025/ \nDr. Letitia Chambers\, former CEO of the Heard Museum in Phoenix\, Arizona\, curated the exhibition together with artist and museum consultant Cathy Short (Citizen Potawatomi Nation)\, and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, which originated this seminal exhibition. \nThe studio glass art movement began in the 1960’s and has developed into a significant genre of fine art.  The contemporary Native American arts movement also began in the 1960s with the founding of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe.  The book\, Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass\, tells the story of how these two movements came together in the 1970’s when Dale Chihuly\, perhaps the best-known American glass artist and an innovator in the field\, set up a glass art teaching program at IAIA.  Over the nearly 50 years since\, American Indian artists have created an extraordinary body of glass art.  The Clearly Indigenous exhibit showcases the works of the leading Native glass artists. \nClearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass was originated by The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture\, Santa Fe\, New Mexico. The traveling exhibition was curated by Dr. Letitia Chambers\, and is toured by International Arts & Artists. \nOrganized by International Arts & Artists \nLeadership Sponsor\n\nAdditional Support\nHuntsville Museum of Art Guild and Alabama State Council on the Arts
