Valor: A Tribute to American Veterans – November 13, 2026 – February 14, 2027

Valor: A Tribute to American Veterans is a powerful and timely exhibition that explores the profound ways military service shaped the lives and artistic practices of some of the most influential American artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Bringing together an extraordinary group of painters, sculptors, photographers, and printmakers who served in the armed forces, the exhibition offers a new lens through which to consider the history of modern and contemporary American art.

Although American art is often discussed through movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and postwar modernism, the role military service played in shaping artists’ creative lives has rarely been examined in depth. Valor addresses this overlooked history by tracing how experiences of service, war, displacement, travel, camaraderie, trauma, and cultural exchange informed artistic innovation across generations.

Spanning conflicts from World War I through the Vietnam War, the exhibition features artists including Romare Bearden, Sam Gilliam, Roy Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Indiana, Palmer Hayden, Charles White, Hayward Oubre, Benny Andrews, Roger Shimomura, Barkley Hendricks, and Jacob Lawrence, among others—artists whose work fundamentally expanded the visual language of American art.

By presenting works across a wide range of styles and media, Valor demonstrates that military service did not produce a single aesthetic response, but instead shaped artists in diverse and deeply personal ways. For some, war prompted direct reflections on conflict and human struggle; for others, exposure to new cultures broadened their artistic horizons and introduced global traditions that transformed their work. In each case, these experiences informed the artistic breakthroughs that helped define the postwar era.

Drawn from major museums, galleries, and private collections across the country, Valor: A Tribute to American Veterans offers both a compelling tribute to American veterans and a deeper understanding of the forces that shaped the nation’s cultural landscape.
