Huntsville, Ala. – The Huntsville Museum of Art (HMA) is excited to showcase artworks by famed artist, Alphonse Mucha, in the exhibition Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau on display March 24 – June 23, 2019.

Taking inspiration from the unruly aspects of the natural world, Art Nouveau has influenced art and architecture, especially in graphic work and illustration, with its sinuous lines and whiplash curves.

Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau was organized by the Dhawan Collection in Los Angeles, CA and is toured by Landau Traveling Exhibitions. Presented in the exhibition are 75 works by Mucha.  Through rare original lithographs, proofs and drawings, as well as books, illustrations, portfolios and ephemera, the exhibition examines the broad range of Mucha’s work, which emphasizes creating a new art fit for the new century.

“While many people think they are not familiar with Alphonse Mucha, once they see his work they immediately recognize it because it is so emblematic of Art Nouveau style,” commented HMA Director of Curatorial Affairs Peter Baldaia. “Mucha’s work experienced a huge revival in the late 1960s, with the rise of the hippie movement, so the artist is a particular favorite among baby boomers.”

In celebration of the opening of this exhibition, the Museum will host a Preview Reception on Thursday, March 21st where guests will get a first look at the illustrations before the exhibit opens to the general public on March 24.  Guests will enjoy a wine and cheese reception, along with a live performance by pianist Keith Taylor.

Tickets for the opening event are available now. For more information about this exhibition and to reserve tickets, visit hsvmuseum.org or call 256.535.4350.
