Voices of Our Times series continues with Academy Award-Nominated Actress Mary Badham

To commemorate its 50^th Anniversary, the Huntsville Museum of Art is excited to welcome Academy Award-nominated actress Mary Badham on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. Badham will be continuing the Voices of Our Times series with an in-depth discussion on her role in the 1962 production of To Kill a Mockingbird. She will be taking part in an interview about her role as Jean Louise “Scout” Finch in the film and discussing its message of social injustice.

Executive Director, Christopher Madkour is excited to have Badham as part of its Voices of Our Times series as a celebration of Black History Month.

“To Kill a Mockingbird was enormously popular when Harper Lee’s novel was published in 1960. It was translated into some 40 languages and sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, and a million copies are sold annually. It was on the list of required readings in my English Lit class in high school and it still holds up as one of America’s finest pieces of American literature,” he said.

Badham was cast for the role of “Scout” at the age of ten, with no prior acting experience. After her role, she maintained close contact with Gregory Peck “Atticus” and occasionally accompanied his one-person show lecture tours and award ceremonies.

One of Badham’s main goals is expanding knowledge about the film’s message of social injustice and ensuring each generation of students can experience the film’s impact. She maintains a busy schedule lecturing to audiences internationally about the film and book.

Dana A. Williams, the interim dean of Graduate School, chair of the English Department and a professor of African American Literature at Howard University, will be interviewing Badham during the event. A wine reception will follow the interview.
