Rebels With a Cause presents a captivating selection of paintings, drawings, and sculptures from The Huntsville Museum of Art’s celebrated Sellars Collection of Art by American Women. This collection spotlights over 200 remarkable female artists who were active between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. Many of these artists boldly defied the conventions of their era, exhibiting alongside men, receiving notable awards, and paving the way for future generations of women in art.
The exhibition features works from the Sellars Collection that reflect the profound influence of French Impressionism on American art from the late 19th century onward. The selection showcases works influenced by both French Impressionism and its precursor, the Barbizon style, along with pieces that reflect hallmark qualities of the American Impressionist movement. The exhibition also includes works that diverge from strict Impressionist techniques, showcasing unique, individual artistic voices.
Subjects featured include lush floral arrangements, dynamic still lifes, graceful portraits, evocative genre scenes, and landscapes that span intimate to panoramic views. Together, these works capture different regions across the United States and abroad, presenting a diverse and engaging style that has widespread appeal.
